OK i used to spend quite a bit of time taking photos for fun. Now, since i am the head(and only) photographer for the High School Yearbook i spend ALL of my spare time doing photos for school. i hardly have time to do any editing of the photos, and no time at all ME photos(homework too). Somehow, doing the photos for school is still fun even though its all my time. How do YOU juggle it all? Do you still have fun with the stuff you may not want to be doing(photos or anything)? |

A Mac computer helps. iPhoto 08 is great for basic touchups and keeping up with a huge library of images.
If your edit program allows you to paste the settings/adjustments like contrast, levels, color and W/B adjustments that you use for one shot, on a group of images all at once it saves a lot of time. It works good if the lighting and camera settings are about the same for the group of images.

Macs are my arch enemies(except the really new nice ones). they basically hate my guts and like deleting my important stuff. grr |

My normal work day is 10 to 11 hours. (Not bragging and not complaining, just saying) A couple of times a year I work for 2 to 4 weeks straight, 7 days a week. (Not by choice, trust me.)
However, I try to have fun no matter what I am doing, no matter how long the hours, I try to have fun at work and outside of work. Even the mundane tasks I try to make fun in some way.
It's what keeps me sane, and helps me survive. Most people who know me, would likely tell you that I am a happy and funny person. I do my best to make that true. I have to do it anyway, I might as well do my best to enjoy it.
Yes there are times when it gets to be a bit much. When it does, that's when I know I need to look harder for the fun. |

Sleep. Do without it. LOL
I don't know - the busier I get the more I feel like a computer jock and less like a photographer. I shoot for an hour and spend 2 on the 'puter. I just got LR2 and I think that will help some...so far i'm still deep in the learning curve and only processed one senior so far.
Enjoy THAT part of photography. I'm lucky if I get out 3 or 4 times a year to shoot for 'fun', for myself, that type of thing. And the non-paying pics wait. And wait and wait. I've got stuff from a seminar in April that's almost done, pics from a TTD that I owe the model a disk from, and other stuff that at this point is under a month "old".
Do I have any pics on my walls at home? No. None. I need to do something about that too!

Sounds like you do, and where your future may lie. Life is long, do what you enjoy. |

A suggestion - get a 70-200 f/2.8 lens. The Canon IS version runs about $1700. Then get a 2x teleconverter for it. You end up with the 70-200mm f/2.8 lens, which is perfect for a lot of uses (including some sports); when you pop on the teleconverter, you have a 140-400mm f/5.6 lens. It'll cost you much less than the one you linked to and give you a greater range of options without any real limitations.

Caffeine Pills
In high school I played sports before and after school, then went immediately to work flipping burgers at the DQ until 1:00am. My time was 110% percent spoken-for. I didn't take any easy courses and still managed to keep a 93% average over the four years.
I owe it all to NoDoze. Lots and lots of NoDoze.
Note: I have no vested interest in the company or an affiliated companies involved in the manufacture or sale of NoDoze (TM).

Isn't the 70-200 f/2.8 IS actually more expensive than the 100-400?

I've seen the Pros at the Ohio Renaissance Festival and this is how they did it. It may be analogous to other situations.
1) Concentrate, Relax, keep the momentum.
2) Quickly and Accurately, with precision
3) Only ONE-at-a-Time
4) Smile Occasionally
5) Bow for Applause, and collect money.

I know how you feel. Sleep is overrated. :-/ I get up at 3am everyday (weekdays) for my day job so I can pick my 7 y/o boy up from school in the afternoons and take him to football and soccer practices, and at nights I'm up until 11:30 or so editing photos from my "weekend warrior" work. No time for my own stuff anymore, except maybe pics of my boy in his games which I try not to miss. |

A guy I know that shoots sports for the local paper swears by the Sigma 120-300 f2.8. It's kinda pricey AND quite a load to carry, but he loves it all the same. |
