You made a mistake i commonly make: reading those comments. For some reason, racist, uneducated, and offensive comments are the norm. It IS depressing to think that there is so much of that in the world.

They should.

After all, since the bar and tavern owners were big supporters of her as Mayor of Wasilla, she opposed an effort to close the bars at 2am instead of 5am despite a large number of drunk driving accidents on the road to Wasilla from Fairbanks after the bars closed at 2am in Fairbanks.

Quoting only to point out that it was not *I* who said that, as Spaz's quote of my quote of those quotes seems to make it look. *hiccup*

Whoever up there worried about Palin being able to get a few punches in against Joe...I'm sure Joe will be throwing verbal punches so fast a furiously he'll hit himself a few times. Guaranteed.

So the real suspense over the VP debate will be whether the media think's Joe's verbal gaffes or Sarah's lack of substance will be jucier to report.

That would have been a moot point. After the bars closed at 2 am in Fairbanks, the drunks would have had to drive over 300 miles in less than 3 hours in order to buy a drink in a Wasilla bar before they closed at 5 am. I doubt that they could have done that even if they were sober. And, if they tried it while drunk, it's no wonder there were so many accidents.

1. I like Joe Biden. Have for awhile. I think he has presented himself pretty statesmanly the few times I've seen him on C-Span when they were covering Senate hearings of one sort or another.
2. I like Sarah Palin as she truly holds a couple of positions that are near and dear to me, and I would really like her to come off better than she's been portrayed.

My hope is that they both surprise the pundits and partisans and actually show us how a debate of issues can really be done. But if Joe is the superior debater (which he certainly should be), I hope Sarah at least gets in a couple favorably memorable one liners. We'll see.

Ahh, my poor Alaskan geography...It was not Fairbanks, but, Anchorage, a mere 45mi away, nothing for a determined, driving drunk.

Argh! I didn't say that! I was a-quotin'!

Edit: More to the point: I am pro gay marriage, etc.

An important point I think, is to understand not only that these views exist, but they are potential voters as well. The reason (in my opinion) that this is important, is that when deriving a playbook for garnering these votes, one bneeds to condsider these views. Either write them off or establish a plan to convert them (sometimes defined as educating). If the left wants to educate the right and convert them to vote/support the lefts ideology, it may be wise to understand what makes the right view things as they do. Until you understand your opposition, you can never overcome them with reason. If a portion of a populace is stopping the other portion from accomplishing their agenda, then the protion being stopped typically stops rubbing the opposers nose in the items that keep them agitated. Like gun control. The left doesn't talk about it any more (since '94) as they learned that some items are too costly to publicly debate. They went underground and you'll hear Obama in this campaign re-assure voters about his belief that the 2nd amendment is an individual right (per factcheck.org). Regardless of his bothersome (to some) comment about midwesterners who are insecure and cling to their guns and religion and his votes on record to support the DC gun ban and his personal belief that concealed carry should only be for law enforcement - he will still say "even if I wanted to restrict the 2nd amendment, I can't get it done. The votes are not there". He will not rub the noses of pro 2nd amendment voters with more talk of gun control. he might do it after elected, but not while he needs their votes. In this vein, those on the left who choose to rub their oppositions noses in matters that the opposition considers primary, should be prepared for more of this vitriol.

In other words, if you want to win and fashion the nation after more liberal policies like abortion on demand, greater expanse of welfare and goverment paid healthcare, no war without it directly resulting from attack on our soil, greener enviormentally mandated limits on industry, national institution of gay rights including marriage, the advancement of unions into more businesses and other policies/positions typically associated with the left, then I might suggest you take a page from Clinton and down play the fervor until you get elected. Then prove you can be just as dishonest as the previous administration. It doesn't change where your heart is, just don't rub it in the oppositions face.

Or you can not do it that way.

In defense of Louis - he was originally quoting comments from the article I linked and was using those quotes to make his point of the "caliber" of comenter.

Right now, the biggest difference between Obama and Palin is that Obama talks to reporters and answers their questions.

A few fellow Senators and Reps on both sides of the aisle asked him to stay put and out of the way since he hasn't been involved in any of the discussion thus far which would only politicize or cloud things as they stood. Basically, he's been way out of the loop all week, so he may as well stay there.

However it's good that Bush has invited both he and Obama to the White House to help reel them on board. Mostly to keep the petty polical stuff out of the debate.

Hmmm, I think that's just smart (one of the rare instances for W.), since the bulk of the responsibility for fixing the economy will fall to one of the current candidates.

The issue, as I see it, is that the Republicans, being far more organized (or herdable based on your view), will not vote for a bill their candidate is against. Democrats are either less organized (or more independently minded) and so Obama isn't faced with quite the same dilemma. ABC News was editorializing that the bailout will fly or die based on McCain's support.

Reminds me of the joke where the man asserts, "I belong to no organized party! I'm a Democrat!"

"You were raised by a single mother on food stamps — where does a guy with eight houses who was legacied into Annapolis get off calling you an elitist? And by the way, if you do nothing else, take that word back. Elite is a good word, it means well above average. I’d ask them what their problem is with excellence."

Aaron Sorkin ("The West Wing") imagines a conversation between Barack OBAMA and (fictional) former President JED BARTLET.

Saw highlights. Certainly came accross as a blistering. No doubt Obama supporters were gleeful. Suspect that McCain supporters weren't as amused - but late night is typically not their demographic.
