Well, today i was doing a shoot for a couple of friends. It is their 18 month dating-anniversary, so I was shooting some of them together. I was doing a lens swap from my 70-200mm to my 50mm, and as I was opening up the bag I heard something slip, and then i heard this: *kadonk kadonk* and then *SHATTER*.
Thoughts running through my mind before looking down: "Oh, crap, i just shattered one of my lenses." Thoughts as I was looking down: "Oh, crap, I just shattered by $450 12-24mm".
Next thought after picking it up: "Wow, my filter is obliterated, my lens is somehow unharmed." I put it on my camera, now filterless, and shot a couple shots with it to find that everything was functioning normally and my filter and lens cap were the only ones to take a beating. My lens is still in completely perfect condition somehow.
Soooo... lesson of the day... USE A FILTER
Thats all,
Ryan

| Funny... the exact same thing happened to my 12-24... and the exact same thoughts went through my head... with a few more four letter words because I'm such an eloquent little boy :P. |

Better lesson... Never drop a $450 lens.

lol, yeah much better lesson, but people don't try to decide whether or not to drop a lens, people do try to decide whether or not to use filters

I had the same thing happen one time when I grabbed my backpack style bag which, due to some distraction, I had neglected to fully close. A lens popped out of the bag and onto the hard ground, I heard that awful shattering sound, and when I checked things out it had luckily landed on the UV filter side and destroyed the cap+filter rather than the lens. The lens still worked just fine, thanks I'm sure the the UV filter acting as a buffer.
I am much more careful now to always double check that my bag is fully zipped shut before I pick it up. |

Yeah, my Nikkor 18-200 VR once survived due to the UV filter too!

| Never use filters but always have a hood, so IMO that is safer without putting more glass in front (apart from the obvious don't do that) :-) |
