So, only a week and my partner and I will be in London for a week's vacation. I've got a couple of questions I hope someone can answer.
-does London get a lot of windy days?
-will there be many flowers blooming in the Royal Botanic Gardens this time of the year?
-what are the customs for tipping waitresses/waiters, taxi drivers, etc?

London gets windy, that's for certain.
Do you mean the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew?
Tipping is not really a way of life here. 10% is more than enough, normally.
Why don't you let us know where you will be, so that we can put together a GTG?

Her name is Karen - not Kew (unless that is her code name - as in James Bond)

Seems fair

Now that sounds like a good idea - I had a walk along the South bank the other day from the London Eye, down to the Millenium Bridge, across to St Pauls, along to Buck House, then back to the Eye - a world of photo's in a few short miles. |

Yes, I mean Kew.
My partner Joe and I will be arriving Wednesday morning (17th) and leaving the following Tuesday (23rd). We are staying in a hotel next to the London Eye. We don't have a plan so we don't really know what we will be doing day to day. We're hoping it doesn't rain too much, we will save the museums, churches and indoor stuff for rainy days. We are going to try and squeeze as much into those 6 days as possible. (Zoo, Kew, Tower Bridge, Trafalgar Square, London Eye, Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace, St. Paul's, British Museum, National Gallery, Harrod's, Hyde Park, Canary Wharf, etc, etc, etc, as well as try and do some geocaching)
It would be nice to get together with others but I am no good at planning that sort of thing. If anyone else wants to plan it, that would be great.

About how long did that walk take you?

Well, you could do it in around 2 hours if you was really hustling, but if you wanted to take all day you could quite easily (if one stops off for all the touristy bits and pieces which I highly recommend). I could draw you a map or jot down directions if you want, but landmarks that the walk takes in would be
Start Millennium Wheel,
Walk towards Westminster Bridge passing the London Aquarium + assorted goings on on the South Bank.
Cross over Bridge and that brings you to Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey.
Take a right up Whitehall, you will pass Downing Street (Home of the Prime Minister, you cant actually see much, but you can say you have `been there`). Past the Cenotaph, past Horseguards Parade and end up in Trafalgar Square. Here you have the National Portrait Gallery (free entry I believe), Nelsons Column.
Turn right up `The Mall` and head towards Buckingham Palace, you may even get lucky like some of us on a GTG and actually see the Queen!
Head back down through the park towards Parliament Sq again.. Now you could then jump on a Riverboat and go down to the Tower of London, which will take you past all the sights via the River. Get off the boar at Tower Bridge, see the Tower of London, walk up towards St Pauls Cathedral, once at St Pauls, cross the Millennium bridge towards the Tate modern. Head up the River via the South Bank and arrive back at your hotel.. That would pretty much cover all the sights in a single day, if you actually wanted to visit things like Tower of London etc then you would need to factor in an extra day.. But you would see everything.. Its similar to the route we did when Judi was in town and I think we managed to impress her with all the sights.. If you need any more info PM me and I will give you some more details..
Kew Gardens is amazing at any time of year! I shot a wedding there about a year ago and the grounds are fanatastic, would love to go back in the Autumn.
If there is anything else you would like to see let me know and I will work out the best way to fit them into the `tour`.

Thanks Simms! I've got a map and we have a GPS so hopefully we won't get lost and hopefully we don't miss anything too important.

The weekend of the 20th and 21st is London Open House weekend.
//www.viewlondon.co.uk/whatson/open-house-london-feature-1274.html
Did this last year...especially around the area you are planning to walk..very cool. Some places require reservations, many do not. Some places you can not get into any other day.
Also found Camdentown to be great area for some shots, and night time shooting in London may be the best anywhere. I also will be back in London for a while starting the weekend of the 20th. Enjoy!! |
