Hi,
I might be asking too much, but do you know if it's possible to read the intensity at which ETTL fires, either from the EXIF info, or whether there's some readout on flash or screen when you use the FEL button (Canon 40D & 580EX).
This kind of info would be rather nice when you want to transition from ETTL to manual flash exposure. At the moment I have to either take a stab in the dark, or use a distance chart (I hate fiddling with those things in front of people).
Thanks. |

If you really want to shoot manual, I'd start out by using a flash meter so that you can "nail" your exposures. I think with time you'll get a feel for the distances and the power necessary.
But if you want to quickly measure distances to determine your flash output, try this method.

Thanks for that. I hadn't thought of the knot method... I suppose I'm thinking idealistically--when ISO & f-stop tends to change (eg. different setup, or clouds) when I'm working on the fly, it would be nice just to know the last ETTL output. I don't suppose Canon makes that info easy to obtain tho.

I went looking for this some time ago and never found. I suspect Canon are deliberately not making that info available so it's harder for anyone to reverse what eTTL is doing :-/ There was some stuff known about aTTL but when they switched to eTTL, seems they published VERY little, so apart from educated guesses from some people....
