My first serious film camera was an Olympus, btw. :-) |
This Oly was a surprise gift (and I was actually hoping for a Canon to be my first DSLR). So I thought, I'll learn how to take digital pics and then move on. So a month ago, my husband saw an ad for a deal on a Canon Rebel xsi (whatever that new one is), and I actually hem-hawed on it. Did some research. And decided that I really do like this camera. So I guess this Oly must be my first serious (digital) camera too lol. |
I got my Oly by Best Buy defautl I'd researched and holy heck I'm not even sure anymore which one I wanted but my husband and aI were going to our college sons football game in Rochester mn and it was to be my bday gift..we stopped in Bloomington at the best buy next to corporate hq and tried to buy my camera and in usual best buy fashion it was not in stock and I was not going to let this chance pass me by my only choice was my Olympus E500 and I still have a lot to learn but I love it most days hate it a lot of times and keep on keeping on learning! The biggest challenge is finding Olympus equipment in Northern MN but that is my life lol YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH OLYMPUS I just wish my challenge scores showed how good of a camera I own.....they will it just takes time! |

This looks like a sufficiently biased group. I'm trying to talk myself into making the E-520 my next camera. Maybe you can help. The problem? That damn tempting new Canon Rebel!
It's easy to hear the case for Canon (and I've heard it). But what about Olympus -- and specifically the E-520? Does the camera really not have time lapse (my point-and-shoot does)? Are the lenses really harder to come by and more expensive? Do I care about this four-thirds business?
Sorry to hijack your thread. |

Olympus cameras are fantastic, I would rate them higher than Nikons or Canons in build quality. My only gripe is their lack of very good quality lenses at an affordable price. I don't want a 70-200 at 300 dollars, that's not what I'm getting at. What I do not want is a pro lens at 6,000 dollars. Oly is exactly the same company from 30 years ago, they lack in satisfying their customers with good accessories at an affordable price, especially in the lens category. I won't make the same mistake again, this is my last Oly purchase.
I'm even thinking of buying a Canon to Oly adapter ring so I could use a 70-200 f2.8 Canon lens. I'll lose auto focus but that's not a big thing to me. At least i'll have the lens if I ever do make the switch. Anyone know if such an adaptor ring exists? Off to google it. |

The November issue of Popular Photography magazine has a review of the E-520 and here's the link to the article. I have not read it yet so don't know what they say. But in August they compared 5 mid-level DSLR's and it was not their first choice lol. I know I personally want this or the E-3.
What do you mean by time lapse?
I cannot compare the Oly lenses to any other brand because this is all I have used.
My recommendation is to just buy the body and spend the $$ on better lenses (instead of the kit lenses) - that is what I wish I had done. |
