Come autumn (looking like early November) my girlfriend and I would like to take a little trip to the mountains and see the foliage, do some hiking, get away from it all. We'll be leaving from Scranton, PA, and are looking for suggestions. We've thought about the Catskills or southern Adirondacks but I don't know a lot about places there.

Criteria are loose, but looking like this:
-someplace a bit smaller where we could get a nice motel room or B&B
-on or near a lake/river
-access to some hiking/scenic views/photo spots
-within about 3-4 hours of Scranton

Anyone have some suggestions for nice places? So far I've had some friends suggest Saranac Lake and Lake Placid in the Adirondacks, but that's more like 5 hours away, and as beautiful as it is I don't want to spend that long driving when we only have a couple of days.

This is the range I'm looking at. I'm not opposed to pushing out a little farther, if need me. Looking at it myself, I'm also wondering about the Finger Lakes (the smaller ones?), Lake Oneida, even Lake Ontario.

I know this is a vague request, but share your thoughts on cool places in this area.

I would love to go to Montana. I've always wanted to go. But I'm not sure we could drive there, enjoy it, and drive back in a weekend ;-)

(Post some photos anyway, just so we can all see how amazing it is!)

Well, I'm from the other coast (where we don't have weather or seasons), but early November seems a bit late for the Fall foliage displays, though some of the evidence for climate change would be a delay in those temperature-mediated changes ...

Yosemite might be lovely in November ... if you could get in ... but it is a hell of a long way from the East Coast.
