Did my first shoot in a nite club last night. I'm looking for some suggestions on how to improve next time. It was obviously dark but I didn't want to rely on my flash too much for two reasons, 1. not to annoy the musicians and 2. to better capture the mood of the evening.

To make things more complicated, the stage was lit mostly in red. I did custom white balance off a sheet of paper near the stage - I think that helped a little. The pictures w/o the flash are quite dark and saturated but w/ the flash were too bright. I'm using the built in flash on a 300D (I don't have a speed light yet).

These are my flashless settings:
f 5.6
iso 1600
s 1/30

With the band always moving it was hard to shoot w/ a longer exposure, that & I didn't have a tripod.

Take a look at these samples and let me know what you might have done differntly with the same equipment.

Image Stabilization relay helps out my night hand held photos.

If you have a dark photo use photoshop to copy the layer and change the layer property to screen. You can do this as many times as you like and you don't loose any quality or contrast. Works like a charm for any dark pics.

You don't mention what lens you were using, but 5.6 is too slow for what you are trying to do.

You can get a 50mm f1.8 for $70 if you don't have one already. Shoot it wide open or close to it.

Make sure the flash sync speed is set to auto, or, if the shutter speed that gives is still too slow to handhold, switch to manual and set it to something like 1/30 or even 1/15 that will increase the exposure of the ambient light. Set the flash exposure compensation to -1 or -1.5 to keep the flash from overpowering the ambient light.

If you want to shoot without the flash, set the shutter speed to the slowest you can reasonably hold, and shoot in Tv. If that is still underexposing, turn up the ISO.

IS will help to keep CAMERA movement from blurring your subject, but does nothing to help with a moving subject.

FEC is not native to the 300d but is one of the russian firmware hacks. The cheezzy alternative is to put something over the popup to limit the light it puts out. Various colored bits of plastic work, but if you are worried about annoying the band the 50mm 1.8 (or 1.4 if you have the $) is the way to go.

If you can a setup some suport for your camera, f. inst. putting it on a table and use your waled or your glows or something to control the angel or simply bring a tripod you can use a longer shutter speed.
Often find that some movement of the performers can give good effects.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm using the 18-55mm lens that came with the camera. 5.6 is as low as it goes when zoomed. I know one of the speed lights does FEC, but I'd rather spend the money on a lens at this point.

Thanks again. This is an awesome community
