I am trying to purchase a D70 and can only obtain a body only from my local camera shop. The 18-70 lense kits seem 'un-obtainable'. I have been offered a TOKINA 19-35mm lense and a subsitute. Does anyone own one or point me in the direction where I can find out more info on this lense - I had never heard off it before - then I'm new to this game...
Anyone know of any other general purpose lense for around the £200 to compare with the 18-70?

sigma has a two lens package for about 250 I think
18-50
and I think 50-200

Just made a very similar decision.
Best option is the Nikkor 17-35mm f/2.8 (very expensive but legendary)
Very good second option Nikkor 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5
Rated at 4 to 4.5 points out of a possible 5. Very good wide angle for this application, when buget is tight. Highly recommended. Another possible is the Nikkor 24-85mm f/2.8-4 or lastly the 24-120.
A single focal Nikkor 50mm 1.8 for around $100 US, is still a GREAT lense and rated a 5 out of a possible 5.
(had the wrong focal length cited on the 24-120)

| You don't mention the speed of the lens. Tokina make some rather nice gear in the 'top end' of their line. I have their 28-80 2.8 ATX Pro, and I'm quite satisfied: I think it compares very favorably with similar Canon products, but for much less money. If you can find out exactly which lens your shop is offering to you, visit //www.photographyreview.com/ and do a search for reviews. |

Thanks for the advice, in the end deceided to purchase the D70 with a Sigma 105mm as this was also on my shopping list. The shop 'threw' in the 28-80 lense to be used as a bookstop (in their words). Time to start saving again for the next purchase and a lot of good behaviour needed to 'calm the water' with the wife.
Can't wait to get outside tommorow..........

Congrats on the new beast. Hopefully it feels like it belongs in your hands. You will likely want to go a little wider at some point. The 28-80 is a solid zoom focal length on a film body but a little tight on the D70. Essentially you have a 42-120 which is real nice for "reaching" candids but I believe you will find that over time, you'll want something closer to a 20 or 24 which means getting in the 14-18mm range.
Good luck with the finance minister, they can be a little touchy if they feel slighted......so be sure and express your FULL appreciation of her support for this meaningful endeaver of yours.

Ha! The same situation I'm in, since I made my D70 investment. I think I was doing pretty good at "calming the water", until I ordered my new LowePro backpack, last night.
Hmmm...what can I get my honey for Easter. :)
Congrats, by the way, you're gonna love your new baby.
