I'm looking for sharpening tips for hair -- especially eyelashes and eyebrows. I think unsharp mask is the best choice (versus high pass), but I'm having trouble finding parameters that work well on the entire image. Should I spot sharpen? What parameters work best? Any tips? Thanks in advance.

Have you tried a very tiny pencil sharpener?
Ok back to my cave now : )

Most of the time when I have a difficult sharpening situation, I find that I usually get a better result by applying the USM filter at low levels multiple times.

On a DPC-sized portraiture image (USM settings are image-size dependent) I'd try something like

66%/0.6 dia/TH = 7

and apply it two or three times.

If you are just tlking about eyelashes on an otherwise OK portrait, the previous suggestion of using Photoshop's Sharpen Tool is perfectly valid -- as with the other tools, you can set the brush size and opacity/intensity to achieve a custom effect. It shouldn't be too hard to "paint over" the eyelashes with that, especially if you have a graphics tablet/stylus set.
