Is it possible to tell what file size an image is likley to be at the time you take the picture.

I have taken a shot I wanted to enter into a challenge but it is way to big & won't be accepted.

I have taken the shot on 6million pixcells (Would it be better if i had taken it at say 3million

Its always best to resize in Photoshop. Maximize the 150kb limit too!

3 million pix in full resolution is still way over 150kb. To get the best result I think it´s best to shoot images in best resulution possible and then compress them after processing. JPEG is compressed format and if you use PS or another photo-editing program you should be able to compress your images down to 150kb or lower after resizing.

Havn't got photoshop
How can you maximise the 150kb limit if no Photoshop software
04/06/2004 12:06:43 PM · #5
You will need to resize so that the dimension in pxels of the oongest side is 640 pixels. You will see the file size drop dramatically then.
If you are still above 150k, you can change the jpeg quality level just enough to get below 150k.
Don't make the image dimensions smaller than 640 pixels (longest side) or the pic will look too small. Also, don't reduce the jpeg quality so much that the file size way below 150k (like 50k for example). The jpeg artifacts will become visible.

What software are you using?

What photoediting program do you use?
There must be an option to do some compression on JPEG-files, f. instance save them in % of full quality.

After resizing it can also be useful to do a litle unsharpen mask.

How did you manage to resize your other shots and keep them under 150kb? You must've used an editing program or something.

If you need a good editor for doing file resizing and cropping. Give this a try. I haven't tried it, but it does have a 95% user rating on Download.com and its FREE!

I have Adobe Photo Delux 2.0 installed on my PC. Will have to sort out disc & try installing it on my lap top which is where I am saving all my images. Unfortunatley, my pc won't read CD's I have burned pictures on so only way I can get to use Adobe is to upload images onto another site & then download them from that site. This is a really long winded process as my Lap Top has picked up a virus or some adware which when i browse to select files or insert any text addittional text keeps being added to the boxes I am, trying to complete. A Simple upload can therefore take anything between 30 to 45 mins to complete (if I don't get so fed up with it that I give up)

It sounds like you are trying to get old photos from your CD archive for entering on the site? Just to remind you, the photos you enter must be taken within the same week as the challenge.

Ben, cris just was using that as an example, he was saying that he can't open any CDs he's burned with his photos on them, regardelss of whether or not they are challenge images or not.

In PhotoDeluxe you can resize your photos.

It is recommended to also start with a brand new copy of your image. File > Save As > New Image Name. (In this program it will save it as a PDD file, which you will have to later export to a jpeg, but it will not degrade in quality during each successive edit.)

To enlarge or reduce a photo by entering a width and height:
1 With advanced menus displayed, choose Size > Photo Size. For more information, see Using advanced menus and Using menus.
2 Choose the units of measurement you want from the menus. (pixels)
3 Enter the desired Width or Height or both, and then click OK. (640 width or height, whichever is largest)

Make sure you have the box next to "Proportions" selected or else you'll end up with a lopsided photo. ^_^

Then once you resize it you will most likely need to Sharpen it as well.
With advanced menus displayed, choose Quality > Sharpen. The problem with this is that you don't get to control how much it sharpens your image, but unless you can find another program to resize and sharpen in, it should do fine.

Once you have finished editing, save it as a jpg file and upload it to the site. File > Export > File Format > JPEG > Name it > Save > Options > Medium settings should be fine > Okay. I rarely have problems geting under or at the 150k with my own 3.0 mp camera, so I don't think your files will either.

For your storage transfer problems, have you thought about trying a portable USB device? It's similar to a floppy disk but plugs into your USB drive instead. //reviews-zdnet.com.com/EasyDisk_removable_USB_electronic_hard_disk__16MB_/4505-3186_16-20185067-2.html?tag=review I don't have one, but I've only heard good things about it and I know that my Government teacher uses it regularly.

I am aware of the rule that states that all entries must be taken between the specified dates. I abide by that rule & would not concider entering an old photograph in any of the competitions. I merely store my images on CD & am unable to get my PC to read the CD.

Hi Amy
Thanks for putting Ben in the picture re the problems I have been experiencing (& not entering old images into competitions)
I have a USB Card Reader (Unfortunatley my PC won't recognise it for some reason or other)
I will deffinatley be following your detailed instructions re using PhotoDelux re resizing my images for the next challenge i enter.
I was really dissapointed that I couldn't enter the Wheels challenge as i was really pleased with several of the images i shot in particular the one i was going to enter. I may post them to a forum in the future to get some feedback from other users.
Once again Thanks Ami
Cris
