Ok, here's the situation...I've been selected to be the photographer for an upcoming championship hydroplane boat race, and I could really use some help on what lens would be best for this event, and any tips on how to practice for it. I've haven't done much sports photography and am a little nervous.

im guessing you will be doing a LOT of panning shots, so maybe go sit next to the highway and pratice panning with the cars as they go zipping by

Do you know how far away you will be from the action

I'll be positioned within 100 feet of the front stretch (on shore)

What kind of shots are they expecting from you? In general I would say to use the fastest focusing lens in your arsenal, wide open aperture, fast shutter speed, and hope for good weather, perhaps bright but overcast would be best.

If you don't have the fastest lens/shutter, your may get better photos as the boats are approaching ( up to about a 45 degree angle ), rather than at a full 90 degree angle where movement is at it's maximum. Also, use a tripod to minimize camera shake.
