Hi, I'm looking to buy the Canon 50mm f1.8, and maybe a wideangle too, but I don't really know of any UK places which sell them cheap. People are posting cheap US shops all the time, so I was wondering if there were any UK-based ones. Second hand would be even better.

Thanks for any help.

You don't have to limit yourself to UK only. You can buy in any European Union country, pay the local VAT, pay the shipping and have it delivered to your home without any extra taxes.

Only disadvantage might be that in case of repair you have to ship it to a service center in the country you bought it from.

I bought my F707 two years ago in Germany and saved 25% compared to Danish prices.

Some addresses :
Price comparison in Germany :
//www.guenstiger.de
//www.preistrend.de

Cheap sites in Holland :
//www.diga4u.nl
//www.webvoordelig.nl
(didn't check whether they sell lenses separately)

Second hand :
qxl.com
ebay.de

Only one I know in UK is jessops.co.uk but they are not very cheap.
Suggest you check the ads in magazines like PP for info as well.

//www.warehouseexpress.co.uk have some discounted lenses at the moment Ben. I'd always recommend them - they provided both my Fuji and my Nikon, and have been faultless so far.

There are a lot of Internet camera shops in England, here are a few that I can remember: --
ask direct
warehouse express
Jacobs
Jessop's
camera depot
Digital depot
photo first
LCE
Internet camera's direct
Digital first
Park cameras

That should be enough to keep you going for a little while.

On the front of importing a camera from abroad, you do still have to pay income tax. The thing is that there is no import duty on cameras themselves, but there is a 4% duty on lenses, and 17.5% tax in VAT.

If you have a reasonable local retailer, then you will probably be able to get secondhand lenses there.

Depends on what you mean with "abroad", if it is European Union and local VAT is paid, you don't have to pay UK VAT on top of that. I even think it applies to duties as well (but am not 100% sure), I think there is full free transport of personal goods within EU as long as local taxes were paid. (you can check your tax authorities on this).

If it is from outside EU, yes, then you have to pay all UK duties and taxes, even on the shipping.

look here

Quote from this "Customs duty is not payable on goods bought from countries within the EU. However, VAT is payable (if due) either in the EU country of purchase, or in the UK if the EU supplier is UK VAT registered. But, special rules apply to excise goods i.e. cigarettes, tobacco alcohol etc and these are explained separately."
