Has anyone ever actually created a 'good' flash photograph. i haven't. I just have the flash on the camera mind you... but still, using that i would think it could be 'sorta' nice at least.. but they are ALL horrible.. strong horrible shadows.. and poor direct boring lighting...

i would like some tips, or to see some nice flash photography.
I have only ever used natural lights, or spots..

Direct lighting is always harsh. You should always look for ways to diffuse your flash - bounce off a ceiling, bounce off a white card, use a diffuser like the StoFen Omnibounce, etc.

Speaking of difusing the light from the flash, you could try taping something over the flash, like tissue, different colours for different affects even. I've read of this, haven't actually tried it myself.

Placing tissue directly in front of the flash may be a bad idea, the sudden quick heat build-up may damage the flash's front cover. It's always best to have some space in between the flash and the diffuser.

Some of my past methods of diffusion:

Small plastic jug from my refridgerator:

Bounce card:

Soft box:

At the moment I use a StoFen Omnibounce on my 550EX flash - indoors, at 45-degree angle, the omnibounce rocks!!!

Hey Leaf, I was in the same boat. I hated taking flash shots and just swore that i wouldn't anymore, but I have come to know that the flash is almost a necesity for a good photograph. I have since bought a 550EX, yea I know it's a tad steep but well worth every penny. It has renewed my faith in flash photography. Don't get me wrong there are other good, less expensive flashes...but the 550 just freak'n rocks.
