In swimming however, it is very easy for the athletes to be good at more than one event and therefore dominate much of the races. This is not good.

You mean , like gymnastics?

Let't not make this into a big debate. There are different sports that let you medal MULTIPLE times, including swimming and gymnastics, for the same event/routine. That is just the way it is.

...Meanwhile, back on Planet Earth, what Phelps accomplished may be the single greatest athletic accomplishment of all time. I mean, there are other candidates, sure, but this is so far beyond mortal it boggles the mind.

The feat accomplished by this young man are indeed something to behold.

Having said this, I was and continue to be impressed by the records of one Emil Zatopek, a Czechoslovakian long distance runner who dominated this field from 1948 to 1954. He set 18 world records over various distances including every record from 5K to 30K, and won four Olympic gold medals and one silver.

A summary of his exploits can be found here:Emil Zatopek

I am certain we will continue to hear about Mr. Phelps, as I truly believe he is not done yet.

Michael Phelps should enjoy his moment in the spotlight. Great Britain will have the greatest ever Olympian from 2012...

...once darts is made an Olympic sport.

Well...it is awesome and was great to watch
Now I WANT to watch something else. I have not been able to catch ANY (Greco-Roman) wrestling yet. Freestyle starts this week and think I can find it on any channel, a schedule when I can watch?....no! Keep finding the 12 hour blocks of when it might be on, on this channel or that, but never any REAL time. I sat up from 0300 to 0700 waiting one morning...nothing!
Now basketball is starting to take over the airwaves. YIPPEEE!
Keep rerunning gymnastics and swimming please!
sorry

its the same story the world over...only sports that the country is good at (or if the sport is popular) is shown (ans shown over and over again). I want to see the wrstling matches, the weightlifting, and the whole 10k run (not just 2 first and 2 last laps)...but no, they have to show reruns of local athletes in competitions from previous days

so..i hear ya

Here's an interesting article on how the Americans might be achieving supremacy in the pool.
