Anyone have any suggestions as to the types of things I should be shooting??? I'm thinking about bringing my strobes and umbrella's, any suggestions will help.

The shower is going to kinda like a pool party set up but with no pool, there is a covered area which I assume I will be doing my shooting in there so I can do some bounce flash but should I be using a white diffuser umb, or a reflective silver?

Get in close and watch for people lauging, smiling, interacting with each other.

Should I use my 18-55 or my 55-200?

Flashes or no flashes?

You'll probably want to take both, the short lens when you can get in close and the longer one for those moments when you want to be less obvious (shooting from across the room, etc). Flash - depends on the available light. If its harsh overhead sunlight, then fill-flash is your friend. Bounced flash (off celing or wall) can also help to minimize shadows indoors or out.

I'd say that your umbrella is your best tool. It will surely keep your camera dry at the shower.

I would start with the 55-200 but you won't know for sure till you see how people are using the space if you need the wider. A lot of flash might start making people camera shy but if you need it use it. Take lots of candids and follow up with a nice pose and eyes looking into the camera. If you use redeye make sure you let them know if it double flashes or not. And ask the guests if there is anyone they would really like to have a pic taken with and if so get an email for a chance a more sales or use it as a freebee for advertising.

Just try to have fun...a group of possibly intoxicated woman can lead to almost anything so be prepared. <>

Another thought.... go ahead and create a proofing gallery for them now. Then print the gallery's address on some slips of paper and hand those out while you're shooting "THIS is where you'll be able to see your pictures". I do that for weddings, but I have the address printed on little cards. :)

Ya, be ready for ANYTHING! Tell them your rate doubles if male strippers are involved. :-) Fill flash in Av mode is good in daylight, but if it runs until night remember to switch to manual before the sun sets because as it starts getting dark the shutter speed can drop quickly causing motion blur or camera shake. Have fun!

So how did it go?

08/17/2008 10:52:59 AM · #11
did they think you were the striper?

It went pretty good. I didn't use the strobes at all but still brought them along with 90% of my photography stuff. I was damn near ready for anything.

I shot about 36o images and I'm processing them now. I'll post some here after while.

Sounds like you all are as excited as I am hahahaha.

And no they didn't think I was a stripper. But I was called Mr. Photographer man about a dozen times, hahha

I really wish I had a faster lens though.

It wasn't sunny out and it kinda had just got done raining so it wasn't really all that perfect but without a flash I was shooting at 1/125th, F5.6, ISO1600... Which I hate because it is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO grainy. Yeah I could use NI or NN but for something like this it's a waste of time. Guess I just need to man up and buy a good lens.

Hey, you did a great job on those, Joe! I love some of the candid expressions you captured.

Thanks art... I'm not real happy about them as the light wasn't right and the lens is slow. I am not that happy with the fact that my images are not as crisp as they should be.

Here are the other pictures that I didn't want to have to upload all over again.
