Hi guys,
It's been a while since I was on here... but I'm in need of your help in swaying my decision...
I have the Nikkor 60mm f2.8 (the old version) and I've been looking at upgrading it to the new version... is it worth the extra money? Yes, it has AF-S and doesn't extend at the end anymore, but is there a noticeable difference when using the lens?
My other choice was going to be adding a 50mm 1.4 to my arsenal... not sure yet. Either way I'm going to trade in my Tamron 28-75 and maybe my 60mm... |

Pardon me for quoting Rockwell here, but his data is pretty solid. He says that the AF-D version is better than the AF-S. The D has less distortion, less falloff, and gives you about a half an inch extra working distance. Obviously each one is stellar optically, but for me, since I don't own any version of the 60mm macro, I'd still stick with the D version, since it's cheaper and seems like a better lens altogether. That, and I never autofocus for macro work.

| I love the 60mm D lens and use it all the time. I have not tried the new AF-S version, but can't see how the other can be any better for the extra cost. |

Just to be clear, is this the old AF-D people are speaking of?
Nikon AF Micro-Nikkor 60mm f2.8D
That is IreneM's personal favorite lens and has a pretty solid history of ribbons here, the newer one does not seem so much.
One complicating factor in this is a different lens review of the 60mm than KenRockwell's from Bjørn Rørslett's Lens Survey
One problem of that review is not being clear which 60mm is which. He seems to suggest there have been four or more 60mm macro lenses from Nikon, he is reviewing the latest two?
In any case what bothers me is one is clear for macro, and distant photography, the other is a blurred mess for anything a few inches away but seems to have more DOF. |
