On Sunday, Wiesbaden hosted the Ironman Germany 70.3, a half an Ironman event - 1.9K swim, 90K bike, 21.1K run. LOTS of competitors, volunteers, and spectators. I rode out to the swim area and watched there for awhile, then watched the athletes transition to the bike portion. I didn't get to see the bike ride itself, but did go into town to watch them transition from the bike to the run, and to watch a few finishers. Because the start was staggered, there were competitors on all portions of the course, more or less, throughout the day. I was very impressed with the staging of the event - very well organised. Additional info provided in the photog comments on the shots.

Nice pictures of the event, Melethia. I hope to pick up some good shots myself later this month when I attend the Canadian Ironman event in Penticiton, BC. Both my husband and son will be competing in it.

Excellent! I love how you captured the action around the race! Ironman events are nuts! I couldn't believe how many people were at Lake Placid a couple years ago. I just covered a local sprint/F1 triathlon this past Saturday. I love the environment there, no matter how big or small the race, the crowds, staff, and athletes are just so enthusiastic and friendly.

It really was a fun event to attend. A lot of the athletes had their own "cheering sections" of family and friends, often decked out in T-shirts with the person's name or something, and they'd travel along the course to cheer their athlete on. The fact that the run looped three times made it easier for them to provide support, and it was great to see the athlete as they came by and were recognized quite boisterously. At the finish, there was a hearty crowd cheering EVERYONE as they went by - the smiles there were great to see!
