I like the phrase 'have frame built' - like you can do all the rest, but glueing a few bits of wood together might be tricky :-)

there is a few tutorials ((one here) on this using a Mac also. Have been in the thinking of changing an old 5400 laptop into this with a wifi or bluetooth connection to send it pictures.

I made one at work out of an old 386-20Mhz laptop with a 20MB HD. I just took the screen hinge apart, folded the screen back onto the back of the laptop, sort of like a tablet pc. Then installed a DOS based slideshow program (it's really too crappy to run anything beyond windows 3.1, so this works well). I sit it in the corner of my bookshelf and it's always on, cycling through about 100 pics.
I constantly get compliments on it and most people think I bought it somewhere. Best $0.00 I ever spent :)
(you can pick up super old laptops for almost that cheap on ebay) |

I was just looking into that option of flipping it over with my 1400CS (not a 5400) and then making a big fat frame for it. Hope it works, less chances for me to break something. (C:

there are loads of really good projects using mini PCs over at www.miniitx.com , amongst them an excellent digital photo frame, the site appears to be down at the mo though so I can't post a direct link to it.
//edit
Here it is: //www.mini-itx.com/projects/pictureframepc/
resulting in a nice looking frame://www.mini-itx.com/projects/pictureframepc/images/pictureframepc0006.jpg
