I tell the bride at the initial consult that I have no problem with anyone taking pics - BUT, there is only so much time availabale and if Uncle Bob or whomever wants to take pics it will slow things down and she won't get all of what she's paying for. I also work fast ... (i've had videographers tell me to slow down) and that keeps most uncle bobs off balance as well.
I've not had a B&G hire a second photog...that's just about weird. I offer a second photog at the sales presentation so I'd be pissed a bit if they hired a second for the wedding day. I think it's in my contract that i'm the only photog and i reserve the right to walk...but in this day and age that can put you out of business. Too many bridal forums where brides talk and chat and ask about photogs. Word gets out you're rude or walked out and you may see your business vanish. I don't freqent the forums but every once in a while a bit of googling or forum searching will turn up my name and so far i've seen nothing much - good or bad (for better worse I suppose), but it's something to keep in the back of your mind at times like these.
I did have a recent wedding where a niece of the bride kept standing up in the aisle to take pics blocking my second photographer's angle from the back of the church. Oh well, right? That is until the bride gets the proofs and asks me to erase this girl from all the shots! Not possible in most cases. It's her relative, her ceremony, she'll have to live with the results. Had my assistant asked the girl to sit down there would probably have been feedback about the 'mean, selfish photographers'. No, you can't win.
