I was told that i had to buy a flash trigger for school because i have to hook my Nikon D80 up to studio strobes and flash units and the D80 doesn't have a sync chord connection on it. So I went out and picked up this "cameron radio flash trigger"... i've been trying to hook it up to my SB-800 speed light flash but i can't seem to figure out how to do it. Is anyone familiar with this unit?

Are you referring to this If so you hook the transmitter in your hotshoe, and then the reciever end is hooked to your studio strobes. Or if your flash has a Sync connection hook it to it. The reciever should have a short sync cord attached to it.

i tried to hook it up like that.. but the problem is that my D80 doesn't have a hook up that the transmitter needs.. and the chord thats attached to the receiver also doesn't have the attachment on it that will allow me to plug it into my SB-800 flash unit.

First off there is no need to hook up the SB-800 like that. You can use it off camera in commander mode. But if you do you may have to change the settings on the SB-800 like putting it into SU-4 mode and you will need a sync cord to plug into the SB-800. The studio strobs have a 1/4 inch plug and will receive the 1/4" from the trigger like in the picture. Also most strobes can be triggered by another flash, that is how I trigger my strobes most of the time.

oh ok thank thegrand.. I haven't started my program yet so i haven't worked with the strobes yet i was trying to get a head start. Thank you though. Do you by chance know how to make the SB-800 flash fire without the on camera flash going off, I've heard there's away to do it but i can't seem to figure out how

No the on camera flash will always have to fire but you can turn the power way down to 1/128th power and still have it trigger the SB-800 but to do that you need to set it to SU-4 mode. Or you can set the SB-800 to TTL and the D80 to commander mode and let the camera control the light. You can still shoot in manual mode and set everything the way you want it then the camera tells the flash how much juice to give the exposure. It is part of the CLS (Creative Lighting System) from Nikon.

The transmitter should go in the hotshoe. Once it is in the hotshoe you dont need any other connections to the camera at all. Are you saying your D80 doesnt have a hotshoe?

Perhaps you really dont understand how the system works, the transmitter goes on your camera where they SB-800 would go, your reciever will hook to the strobes with a standard sync cable. If your SB-800 doesnt have a standard sync port you will need an adapter.

ah ok mattO.. thanks i understood.. i just thought that even with the trasmitter being on the hotshoe i'd still need the cable that came with the system to plug into the camera somewhere.. but now i understand I don't. thanks for the help.

MattO... I had to get a 1/4 inch Stereo to PC Sync Adaptor chord as the cameron radio flash trigger has a 1/4 inch stereo plug and the SB-800 has a PC sync port... I got the adaptor and tried it out but the flash isn't firing... i'm in Manual mode as I like to be able to control the light more... the flash is on Channel 1, Group A... any suggestions as to why it isn't firing the flash?
Also when I push the "Test" button on the Transmitter the Receiver light is flashing so the signal is getting from the Transmitter to the receiver but not allowing the flash to fire?
