Is that 50% of sales or 50% of profit? 50% of sales seems a bit steep, but you should ask about what they do to make sure your art sells. IOW what they're offering you, aside from a wall where people can see your art. Do they host an opening, where you can meet the people who might purchase? If they do, do they provide the drinks and snacks? Do they place ads in the local art paper, send press releases to the local paper? Advertise the opening? Send out flyers to regular patrons on their mailing list? Do they hang your art for you? Provide help hanging? What's their track record with selling art? How many sales do they typically make from a show?
If they're really going all out to promote your art and help you sell it, then 50% is probably reasonable. If not, then it may not be worth it. Of course it will depend a lot on what the local market is like. If all the galleries locally are charging the same, then you might be stuck.
1) I like to print full frame, so I print 8x12, mat with a double mat, 2.5" top and sides, 3.5" on bottom, 1/4" overlap on each side of the print, add the frame and glass.
2) How much is your art worth? How much do similarly sized photos sell for locally? How much do you want/need to make?
3) I dunno, I never looked into one.
4) I prefer a black undermat with a white overmat for color work with about 1/2" of the undermat showing.
5) I do. |
