Someone has asked a friend and I if we think we can maintain a website for him so he can break away from the person he is using now. It is a simple website for a community association. The website has already been built and it is already hosted by the association. If we say yes to this and do well this same person will eventually want to turn over their business website to us too. My question is how hard is it to maintain---can we teach ourselves? We both have a lot of computer experience, but I've only played with small personal websites in the past.

Then it shouldn't be much more complicated than a personal website, since I assume it's not an interactive site (for example, no commerce). The question would be how often does the site need updating? Is it merely a matter of keeping a calendar up to date and changing phone numbers when people come and go?

Sorry, I missed this part at first. That can be very complicated, depending on the business and your responsibilities. Do you have a hand in hosting? Maintaining security?

best & worst answer is
"it depends"
how is your programming ? who has license for the code (if any) involved ?
database back end ? what kind ? can you maintain a DB ?
PHP? ASP ? LAMP ?

yes you can teach yourself .. but without knowing your baseline it is hard to say what kind of jump it is ..
