I was shooting my camera with the factory settings, I talked to some pro's and they told me to set my camera up a different way. Now my camera (Nikon D80), is set up to adobe 98' in the settings. When I go to save my images to 'web' I was told to convert profile to sRBG. I'm wondering if I should still be doing this now that my camera settings are changed. When I go to 'save for web' the pictures seem to lose a lot of their color, contrast and overall depth to the photograph.

When i save my pictures, usually go to file>save and i'll save one PEF file incase i want to change the pic later and one JPG pic for print. Then I go to Image>Image size... then i change the larger number to 640 after doing that I go to Edit>Convert to profile and thats where i change it over to sRBG then to File>save for web... when the 'save for web' dialog window opens up and i see the picture.. its completely drained.. the colors dead, contrast is low.. i've been having problems with this for awhile.. i can't seem to fix it.

and i use a MACBOOK laptop.

First, are you shooting RAW or JPEG? the reason I ask is, if you are shooting RAW there really is no impact to what color space you choose in-camera; you can choose any color space you wish upon conversion.
If you are shooting JPEG and have your camera set to a color space other than sRGB, *or* you shot RAW and converted to a color space other than sRGB, then yes, you definitely need to convert to sRGB prior to Save for Web. Save for Web simply strips off the color space data, and the standard space for the web is sRGB. An image in another space will often display incorrectly, whether or not it still has its color space info intact.
If you are converting and still have a problem with colors changing, then you may have other PS settings issues. If you have "Proof Colors" under the "View" menu checked, uncheck it. This can be a source of problems.

Just to clarify:
Apple Safari (on PC or Mac) will display the other than sRGB profile correctly.

Safari is the only one right now that will do that. So your advice is correct publish for the web in sRGB and you wont have any issues.
