September 6th I'm going to Richmond International Speedway for the Rock and Roll 400 race. From my understanding I will be sitting in the in-field area, (military deal) but have no clue where exactly (I've looked at the track map and can't see the seating there). Since my second job is doing ok, I was thinking of renting this lens Zuiko Digital 50-200 f/2.8-3.5 SWD
but then saw they have the E-3 body for rent also. For the 4 days it would cost me $50 for the lens and about $104. for the body.
Currently I have my E-500 and a 40-150 3.5-4.5 and a 1.4x tele converter (EC-14) so would it be better for me to get the ultra fast focus and other pro's of the E-3 or go with a bit better distance.
also if anyone knows a better place to rent 4/3 lens at (maybe in NC) than I'd love to see...thanks in advance all.
(p.s. I will be without a computer all day today so please be patient if you ask for more info...thanks |

I have always used around a 300 mm at races.. but in the infield a 200 may work fine. Here are some of my shots from cali and pir.....

You won't want to go back to your e500 if you handle an E3 for 4 days. I sold my e500 2 months after I bought the E3, it was gathering dust. I would rent the body too. The speed of it will blow away the e500. I don't shoot races but I figure you'll need speed when taking shots in a curve or on a pass so the E3 will do the job for you no prob. With the SWD lens, you'll have a great shooting day.
Don't forget to show us the results. :)

Thanks for the advice Andymac, you got some nice shots (really like the back flip, nice timing) I hope I can do half as good.
Jac, that is what I am afraid of lol. I really love my 500 (my wife hates it though lol) but if I had the opportunity...and money...I would love to do the big upgrade.
I am still torn if a 150 with a 1.4 convertor will be enough to get what I want (is 200 what it ends up being?). I'm gonna call the coordinator today and see if he knows more about the seating (plus I have just found out that a fellow DPC'r will be shooting the race and has invited me to email him...totally cool) |

IMHO you will need the extra zoom over a better camera body without question, though I don't know the Olympus range at all but 8MP will be plenty. I'd hire the longest lens in your budget .... at motoracing events I'm generally using 300mm or 400mm focal lengths far more than anything else.
Another thing worth mentioning, depending on the circuit fencing I've found the 300mm will poke through the fence at most places but the 400mm has no chance ... though you may well be able to see over the fence |

well I did it, I ordered the lens. Afterwards, I called them to ask a question and found out someone had just ordered the camera body for the exact time period so even if I wanted to I couldn't have changed my mind. I am so excited about this trip and using this lens, I sure hope the SWD helps this old man keep the camera steady if I'm not able to use my tripod or monopod.
Thanks again for everyones help and advice. I'll share the images as soon as I can. |

I'm not sure I understand how SWD is going to help keep your camera steady?

As I was double checking your question I noticed I read Olympus' page wrong, Supersonic Wave Drive (SWD) is a high output,... Simultaneously, this technology is used in the camera body as an effective camera shake compensation motor. I mis-understood the part about shake compensation, since it isn't in my camera's body it most likly won't help at all...my bad. |

So I got the lens yesterday but wasn't supposed to receive it till Friday, I called the company and they said "well you just got two free days to play with it, on us"...cool!
Tonight I'm hoping to go mess with it a little bit to see what it can do but might return it Friday (and see about a refund...probably not) if the stupid tropical storm hannah keeps coming our way and delays the race! According to a lot of info, the storm should hit us as a Level 1 hurricane on Saturday with bands just barely reaching up to Virginia Beach area. So we might still get to go, not sure...fingers, toes and other things crossed!
edit....ok why isn't the hyperlink thingy working?
