Well, it is time for me to do another wedding, I was hired last night by a Catholic family, and as we all know, most Catholic weddings prohibit flash.

I don't have very fast glass in my limited assortment of lenses. I am looking at the EF 50mm 1.4 USM. Has anyone used this for a wedding? I wonder if this would be a good choice as I cannot afford the "L" at this time.

Thoughts?

I've used my 50 1.4 at weddings.... but that was before I got my 17-55, now I use it and my 70-200 90% of the time. The 50mm will do fine, but you'll be running back & forth a lot to get composition. You need a zoom as well (since in a catholic church you could be stuck way back in the church during the ceremony). Perhaps consider renting a spare body and a lens or two to compliment the 50.

I have a spare body, and a 70-200, just not fast enough for low light.

17-55 2.8 IS. You'll want IS and while 1.4 is faster than 2.8 with IS you don't lose much and 1.4 is way shallow for some shots.

Most catholic churches (OK, the ones from the 50s and 60s) are relatively bright inside. The older cathedral ones are typically darker. The traditional solution is a tripod from the back of the church, but you can push ISO up - 1600 shouldn't be much of an issue on a 30D as long as you don't underexpose.

In 4+ years of weddings I've used flash twice - once in the very beginning and a few weeks ago - ISO 3200, 2.8 and 1/15 second was the ambient light! And it was a tuesday at 3 pm on a sunny day!

That's what you get for shooting those Satanic weddings. They like the low-light ambiance before sacrificing the goat. ;-)

I used a Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM on my 40D for nearly every shot in the one wedding I did, but it was held outside... and no goats were harmed. :-P

Ive used that lens for a wedding. I prefer a zoom. I do rent lenses through my site www.rentphotostuff.com.

Send an email if interested, right now everything on the site shows out of stock due to my partner and I being in Colorado shooting a wedding. Just got back and should have everyhting back up and running tonight.

As for flash, the wedding in CO had me use more flash than I ever have before. 11am outdoor ceremony in the woods. Shadows were something fierce. Followed by a reception in a a large log cabin lodge w/ high brown, dull ceilings that were angled. Also the lodge had hanging lights w/ hoods so bounce was hit or miss. If it hit one of the hoods it would go in a random direction. All in all probably the most difficult wedding ive ever shot, but also the most rewarding as the bride and groom shots were done by a lake w/ the mtns as a backdrop, the formals were in a field of Aspens and the couple came in on horse drawn carriage.
