if you are really hurting and need to get it off your camera. Run to an electronics store and get a card reader cheap. It will save battery power on your camera too. Can't offer any advice for the computer though. Did you plug something else in the USB slot to make sure it works?

Mac or PC?
For PC, in Windows explorer, does Canon EOS 40D show below all your other drives?
That's how it shows up when I plug mine in to my Windows XP PC.
What shows on the back of the camera? Should be the direct transfer menu.
Do you have the EOS Utility software installed? That's what opens when you plug the camera in.

all I can think of is what you've done--trying a different wire.
I had a similar problem once, due to bad wires... |

| you may need to go into disk management (while its plugged in) and assign it a drive letter |

This is going to sound dumb but is the USB cable plugged in all the way on both ends? Is the camera turned on?
Try the steps in this order:
1) Make sure camera is off (this shouldn't matter but what the hay)
2) Plug USB cable in (both ends, duh)
3) Turn on camera
If it doesn't work, try removing the battery for a few minutes then try the steps again.

| That sort of thing keeps happening to my mom's computer. I think it has to do with the automatic updates. I've had to un-install and re-install several programs for her. Finally figured out that was only half her problem, the USB port I kept plugging stuff into doesn't work right. Since you've already did the un-install/re-install, maybe try all of your USB ports. |

You might try going into hardware and removing the device, and let it find it again.
Does it show up in device manager?

| Unplug all other USB stuff and reboot. My PC doesn't like it when I have the scanner and the printer plugged in and try to add something else! |

Have you added any software since the last time you were able to upload?

And what is the default settings for the file types you are trying to open. Not sure if I worded that correctly?
Look under Control Panel --> Folder Options --> File Types. and see what actions the computer thinks it should run when it see that type of file (jpg/tiff/raw) whatever format it is that you are shooting with. It could be trying to open them with the wrong pgm. |

Turning off and rebooting should work. When you next unplug your camera make sure you use the "Safely Remove Hardware" button before removing the usb plug.

It doesn't have a drive letter. It just shows up with a little camera icon. |
sometimes they show up as a "device with removable storage" in which case it would have a letter.
if it were me i would have started by just reinstalling the drivers |

When this camera is connected it shows up as a little camera icon below all the drives.
Also, for windows XP (may be the same for vista) no drivers need be installed explicitly.
I never connect the camera to the computer but for sake of helping I did this time. The computer just recognized the camera. EOS Utility opened automatically once the camera was turned on. No drivers have been explicitly installed for this camera or any other for that matter.
In the Device Manager it's listed under imaging devices.

Is there a camera setting for P2P (Peer to Peer) or Mass Storage? Might check that.

well im not trying to get into an argument here, but there is no way the eos utility is part of a standard xp install, when the utility is installed the drivers are also |

the driver definition in the device manager says it's a microsoft driver, not Canon and it's dated 2001, long before the 40D was released.
