Looking for suggestions as to how this could've been better. It scored a 4.8368 which was below my average and got me out of the tournament. I had really tried to keep this very simple and do something dramatic with the lighting. Was it doomed from the setup? or could I have done something different in PP? Thanks for any feedback.

I see quite a few score-bringer-downers. First, it's too small (and some people vote down for that, myself included). 585 pixels on the long edge gives every other shot with 640 an instant advantage. The image is also only 99k. I'd expect it to be up around the 150k limit (thus it may be compressed more than necessary). Also, if you strip the EXIF data it gives you a bit more room for image data.
Ok, size stuff aside...
The whole thing looks to be tilted to the right a ways. I don't like that the handle/pump thing is cut off. The reflections really compete with the objects themselves. A more subtle reflection would help quite a bit, I think. It appears to be lit from below, which looks odd to me. Had I voted on it, I would have given it a 4.
For a good role model who creates high scoring, simple, dynamic lighting images check out IreneM (as If she hasn't gotten enough attention lately!). |

Strikes me as having some similarity to a few of my own entries in that it has a lot of the elements that lead to a high score around here, but somehow it does not quite come together right. Agree with most of waht 'Freakin said. I don't see any obvious compression artifacts (I'm the guy who sees tons of artifacts when nobody else does), but that additional 50k overhead that you didn't use may have been able to get you a bit more detail. I do like the way the lighting looks on the rose. |

I gave this a 5. I think the idea was nice but the bottom light way over powered the top fill light, The reflected image makes for a lot more bright reflective stuff in the frame when you already have a very complex and reflective subject. The glass bottle is very bright and it washed out the chrome cap and nebulizer. The Rose looks very nice, I think if you had done this on a dark grey or mottled background with no reflection it would have done really well. Im not as worried about the bulb leaving the frame If the focus was all on the bottle, but with the bottle so bright your eyes track off to the side to the bulb which then disappoints as it is far better exposed and detailed then the main subject(I hope that made sense to you)
Also on second look I noticed that you seem to have a double reflection of the rose, some place there was a discussion about using glass sheets for underlighting and reflections and some tips about ways to prevent the double reflective look that you have, It really muddies up the reflections in that area.
Any way I'm not a pro or anything but those are my thoughts, i hope they are of some value to you.

Besides the slight tilt, the strong bottom light might have worked better if the crop wasn't so tight. The image needs a bit more negative space to help the group of objects work as one "still life" subject instead of each object trying to be the main subject. Also, never use a mirror for reflections, as it causes doubles. Glass with a black background underneath works best.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for these comments. I definitely see how the light was too overpowering and caused the reflection to compete with the main image. The tilt is also something I should have corrected.
Tim- actually it was a piece of glass lit from the bottom with a black background. |
