I'm in the market for a new P&S for under $500 and was excited to see the latest Nikon offering.
Raw, manual, VR, wide (28mm), somewhat fast (2.7), hotshoe and builtin GPS tagging.
But it baffles me why they created a new RAW format that will only work with their to be released "ViewNX" software and on Vista only!
If Adobe Camera Raw (and LR) won't be able to view this then Nikon has a nice shiny turd on their hands that will collect a lot of dust on store shelves.
Do they honestly think this will save their Capture NX software line from the toilet?

Does anyone know of a similar situation where the RAW format eventually gets added to ACR?

"... downer about RAW, however, is that it will be in an exclusive new Nikon format, NRW RAW, which will be viewable on Nikon ViewNX softare, which will be available in October. The Nikon Coolpix P6000 will be available in September."

I don't really see the advantage of getting one of these over the Panasonix Lumix DMC-LX3 that'll be coming out shortly...

very handsome camera! looks like a replacement for my old Nikon Coolpix 800 :p
i wonder if it does IR photography as well as the old 800.

EDIT to add: yea its a stupid move to be using proprietary RAW format :/

I think every Nikon model is coming with its own RAW NEF format these days, which may or may not be a good thing. The vista requirement is stupidcakes though.

Nikon SLRs all use .NEF, from my D1 to my D300, what're you talking about? <__<

Well raw is raw, all raw is raw, from his raw to my raw, raw is what raw is. CR2 and NEF are specific propriety raw formats.
