I was at the store today and I saw something about Route I in a magazine so I came home and researched it some more.
Has anyone ever driven on this beautiful route? I am curious, Right as I saw it I thought "how cool would it be to have a road trip with the hubby and just drive- stay wherever we can and enjoy the scenery"

Anyone?

You might want to wait. This is where the recent fires have been.

One of the most beautiful highways in the US I believe but I may be biased since I live so close to it. :P
Seriously, it is a stunning trip up or down the coast. It is very windy in parts and often has drops of hundreds of feet for much of the trip also. If you get carsick, probably something to think about. Otherwise go for it!

You may want to check that the whole route is open, on occasion parts are closed from landslides and repair. Also I am not sure about the Big Sur area since the wildfires, but you may want to check that too. Its a great trip.

ETA: Big Sur complex now 100% contained.

I totally didnt thkn about the wildfires!
This trip would have to be sometime next year though, but it was a thought and something I would like to do.
I live in Nor Cal and yes, the smoke up here is horrible, wasn't sure about down there. I am so stoked and have something more to add to my

things to do before I die list hehe

We drove it a few years ago, from Santa Maria up to just south of Monterey. It is beautiful and I would love to go again myself, since the last trip was before I'd seriously taken up photography. If you get the chance, go for it!

I believe this is just south of Big Sur, taken about 6 years ago.

There are many other fine things to see along the way too:
-Santa Cruz Beach/Boardwalk
-Monterey Bay Aquarium
-Asilomar Conference Center
-Point Lobos State Reserve (one of the most-photographed pieces of coastline in the world)
-Hearst Castle/San Simeon
-Santa Monica Pier (the southern terminus)

If you search the forums you will find previous links to most of these sites -- there have been many people who have asked about this drive.

The drive northwards from San Francisco through Marin and Mendocino is beautiful too, but with a very different look with the fog and the Coast Redwoods.

It's beautiful and well worth the effort.

BTW, I always recommend going north so you are on the inside of the curves instead of right on the edge of the cliffs. Not a big deal either way but I like that extra lane of cushion. :)

Definitely one of the best highways to drive in a convertible.

Hah, I more or less used to live on that highway, I spent so much time there. Heaven on earth...

when the fires subside, there are some wondrous views.

lots of vineyards and wineries, lots of tourist traps, lots of mountains and ocean.

definetly a place for a camera.
