I'm goofing around with the equipment at my new job. Looks like they have a 5D, Canon 100mm macro, and a ring flash. I was doing some test shots and noticed that I couldn't get the beep for the AF with the lens. First I saw the beep was turned off, but turning it on didn't help. Switching to MF I managed to get it to beep. I have focus set to center only. The lens also sounds like it is "mini-hunting". It's not wildly changing focus, but it sounds like it is always making minute adjustments. I was shooting on Manual mode. Is there a function for AF servo that I am forgetting? Do you get a beep if the AF servo is engaged?

The beep only works in one shot. You wont get one in AL servo.

Thanks. The answer was right in front of me on the display. It was in AI Servo after all.

I don't think there is a beep with the AI Servo mode. I use AI Focus and always get the beep. I would think that if you are handholding the lens it would make minute adjustments if you are really close to the subject because the plane of focus is pretty thin...(is that what you call it?)
