Tweetie on the iPhone will support multiple accounts. No PC version though so I'm using TweetDeck on the desktop, too, which at least has some nice lists/filtering.

Not sure how useful it is. Was interesting following the events in Iran a couple of weeks ago. //twitter.com/psychicalsol

I do. Didn't do much at first but have start doing more in the past couple of months. I kinda like it.

Studies have shown it causes hair growth on the palms of your hands and can also lead to blindness.

It's also been shown to increase one persons ability to offend large groups of people by a thousand percent!!!! At least for short periods of time. :)

Just found out Tweetie on the mac does multiple accounts as well. Happy days.

Although, I've been using Twitterrific on the iPhone, it's free - apart from the ads.

I haven't actually tried out TweetDeck yet.

Some Twitter users likely unaware...

I noticed another article earlier today (can't find it now) that mentioned warnings about shortened URL's (in addition to the items the linked article discusses).

The security risk here isn't actually from Twitter itself, but from users clicking on shortened links which take them to websites which either get them to install a trojan, or infect them with malware in some other way. In fact, no different to someone clicking that same link from within an email message, a facebook wall post, or a post in a forum. The risk is not specific to Twitter.

I am initially more concerned about the personal security implications of the 'Location Services' features in the iPhone and Twitter.

Location Services use a service called SkyHook. What this is is a massive database of wi-fi router Mac addresses mapped to geographic co-ordinates. SkyHook drove around various countries automatically scanning for wi-fi routers (domestic or business, it makes no difference) and when it detected one, it recorded its unique Mac address and the exact location co-ordinates where it was detected. There are tens of millions of these mappings now stored in the SkyHook database.

So, when you switch on your iPhone and tell it to locate you, it scans the area for wi-fi signals, and looks up their Mac address on the SkyHook database, this then gives your exact geographic location - Without using the GPS system! - I have an iPod Touch, it doesn't have GPS, but it can still give me my exact co-ordinates down to 10 meters because of the network of wi-fi routers around here.

As a result of this functionality I've seen people on Twitter revealing their exact GPS co-ordinates, right down to their house number (not sure if this is intentional or not, but it's how SkyHook+iPhone Twitter work together)

I think you can join the dots...

Not 100% true ("The security risk here isn't actually from Twitter itself...") - Twitter faces security issues

From this second linked article (bold emphasis added):
"On Monday, the company also acknowledged that hackers took over the Twitter accounts of several celebrities, including Barack Obama and Britney Spears. The hackers were able to get access to Twitter tools used by the company's support team and change e-mail addresses and passwords associated with 33 accounts. ...

... The company plans to increase website sign-in security and restrict access to Twitter support tools
."

There's also some finger pointed at Twitter for not scrutinizing 3rd-party app's before approving for use on Twitter (at least the way I understand it).

ETA - bold highlights.

All of this inspires so much confidence. :p

Perhaps I'll just go and hide under my rock for a few more years.

Sorry. I wasn't trying to cause any angst, heck, I don't Twitter - I just noticed the article earlier today and thought it might be of some interest to participants of this thread. :-/

I haven't tried it and don't see any need for it. Got too much to keep up with already.

I was kidding. Every form of social networking has had and will have security issues. It's still in its infancy.

Another thing on the rise in Twitter is the scourge of spam. Spammers have caught on that if they tweet the trending topics then their spam will be riding high on the public timeline. Most annoying.

Which one will kill social networking first? The spammers or the security/privacy issues? :)

Tweetie on the iPhone is worth the money. First app I ever paid for and I switched from Twitterrific.

Thanks for the recommendation. I love Tweetie on the Mac.

Now, if I could just scrape together the €2.39 asking price.... :)

Please rob me

My day job is IT security and privacy, so I check on sites like this. I do twitter using my real identity, but it's mostly for the local community. Thought about having another photography related account. Anyway, I do not overshare and I strongly advise against it, especially location-based tweets.

Anyone who tries hard enough can get any info they want about anyone. We've traded security and privacy for convenience.

I didn't 'get' twitter for a while, but I can see it's value especially at events or among specific groups. I find it rather useless from a local, small business perspective but it helps keep me up to date with industry trends. I also enjoy people who can make me laugh in under 140.
