Joined a couple weeks ago. Think I'll use it with TweetCall when I'm on my motorcycle trips to let people know what's going on -- might be fun.

LOVE the video, mentioned already. That pretty-much sums twitter up perfectly.

Remember in one of the Terminator movies...where they talked about the need to be "off the grid"...No drivers license...vehicle reg....phone bill, home address...phone...etc...
....If the Terminators used that "grid" today...we'd all be toast ! (IMO of course - Inside joke)

I just read a news story... Twitter is very popular with criminals. People post all the time where they are, for all to see and it is perfect to find out who they are and rob their house empty when they tell they are not at home.

I've been hearing this all the time but never seem to see the "story". Can you post the link?
I don't twitter but it seems like for this to be true, several things would have to happen:
Everyone (not only your contacts/friends) would have to have access to your "twitters".
You would have to have your exact address somewhere on your twitter page.
The thief would have to live close by or at least in the same area.
You would have to be twittering...."my entire family is out on vacation and my house is empty...and I'm nervous because my alarm system is not functioning."

I can post the link but it is in Dutch.
Most people leave their twitter profiles open/public.
The thief can live anywhere. If you tell "I just bought a new 1Ds with a 10-1000 f/2.8L" or "my boyfriend just gave me a huge diamond" it is worth it to drive a bit. A considerable amount of thefts is done by people who are remote family, "friends" or friends of friends. You'll be surprised how many people have a criminal mind or simply let envy overrule sanity. And that is also why you don't even have to post that your entire family is out on vacation, they already know. Many alarm systems suck.
If you use the same twitter profile name as on other sites and on those other sites you post a link to your personal website, it is possible to get your exact address out of the whois database.
Just be careful with your personal info, that's all I am saying.

Has anyone been following Brent Spiner (of Star Trek: The Next Generation fame)? It's AWESOME. Like the Cliff's Notes to a mystery novel, one and two sentences at a time...
At least I hope it's fiction, or else Brent is in a lot of trouble. :P

Start reading from back around April 8th or so -- and remember to read bottom-to-top, so you don't spoil any surprises! ;)

I resurrected an old twitter account and have started getting into it again. However, there's something I'm very undecided on;
Q. Do you use your real name in Twitter, or an alias?
I've noticed that people you know can find you based on the email address you enter.
It's a tough one... because when you have friends, family, and business clients all mixed up in your 'followers' list, it kind of makes you think twice about what you tweet. |

I use two, actually. A general one under my business name for normal stuff, networking, blah blah, and a locked one under an alias that's for complaining about clients, complaining about everyone else and BSing with friends. If you use a program that allows you to follow two accounts, it's no biggie. |

Yeah, that's the kind of direction I'm heading in. I've just registered my real name (for friends/family to find me), I already have a 'BSing with friends' alias set up that I've been using, and I'm going to set up a business 'brand' one as well where clients can find me.
It's probably a good idea to keep these three things quite separate from each other! And I'm paranoid enough about this kind of stuff as it is.
Looks like I'll be using TweetDeck instead of Tweetie for managing these multiple accounts. |
