We will be taking our kids to the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago tomorrow. Has anyone had success shooting there? Any advice/suggestions/tricks for getting decent shots? I will be taking all my fast glass and various filters with me. Anyone know if monopods are allowed?

I don't think they'll mind the monopod. Shooting in there is a real mixed bag though. The lighting is awful for photography and some of the locations (dolphin tank) are back lit by those huge windows facing Lake Michigan and are just bloody awful for photogs. Good luck.

Fast shutter speeds in low light where you can't use flash (reflects off the glass) is the challenge. I've been to Shedd, but haven't shot there.

Bring a fast telephoto if you have it for the dolphin show! That was one of the highlights of the day when I went.

I had quite an unsuccessful time at the Shedd Acquarium. It's so busy to start with that it's very difficult to get unobstructed views. As I write, I just noticed Strangeghost has made the comment I was going to make about the Dolphin tank. The show is fun, but it's HORRIBLE for photography.

A polarizing filter will probably help, although it will also slow your exposures. Usually they will not allow the use of a flash, but if they do, one you can hold off at a 45 degree angle to the subject will help.

PS. Skip the Shedd and do Adler and Field instead.

;-)

Agreed.

Double agreed - leave the camera if you are going to Shedd - it's just too dark to give you anything usable. Adler and Field (and the Museum of Science & Industry) are much better for photo ops.

Thanks for the advice guys, as for skipping the shedd, this trip is all about my 6 year old daughter getting to see the dolphins, otherwise trust me I would take that advice in a second. If I get any shots worth while I will post them in this thread.

Strangeghost, any ideas for a GTG in the near future? I am going to be around for at least a couple of months yet.

I managed to get a few shots today, You were right on the money, That place is in need of some lighting experts. I can't believe how poorly lit the dolphin show was and we watched the 3PM show at which time was very overcast and the background was still too bright couldn't see any details in the dolphins at all.

Anyway here is my favorite shot from today.
