A friend of mine had a battery terminal jump out of place on a new nikon sb800 flash. Is this a known issue?

Not the I've heard of, but it's an easy fix. Nikon has a fantastic warranty policy for manufacturer defects and will replace it with another one right away. Tell your friend to take it back to any Nikon dealer (if they haven't already) and they'll take care of him.
