This may not belong in this forum so if not then I am sorry.

I was wondering about how others interpreted the scores that they receive. I'm pretty new but here is what I seem to see.

1-2 Bad jokes that didn't work, absolutely garbage shots etc.(also seems to be the place where people dump things that they don't understand) also home of the vindictive SOB vote.

3-4 Looks like something from the 1hr photo lab, and people will tell you why it sucked to, with gusto.

5-6 Typical amature photog stuff, looks nice, well composed, good exposure all that but falls in the "everyone takes that shot when they get started" category. I think this is also why there are so few comments in this range as well.(4 challenges so far and Ive gotten 17 comments total)

7-8 Sparks of life, unique or interesting, eye catching, neat or technically exquisite. These are well commented and complimented, also seem to generate more suggestions on the thing that kept it from being a higher score.

9 HOLY CRAP WHERE DID THAT SHOT COME FROM

10 You should publish a book

Now if i could just figure out what it is that people are interested in seeing.

A common and very reasonable question.
Pretty close to the way I vote, but somehow even the most unique and outstanding entries still get a few 1's through 3's. The rest of us get LOTS of them. My pet theory is that some people vote on a scale of bad<--->good, while others vote on a scale of don't like<--->like. The latter would mean that even a greatimage will be given a low vote if the voter simply does not personally care for the subject.

Keep in mind also that average scores are different than what the voters hand out, and so it's kind of compressed. Most images here end up averaging between 4 and 6.5:

My take on average scores (your opinion may vary!)
3-4.5 Total junk and average snapshots
4.5-5 Normal,good amateur photog stuff
5-5.5 Your friends and relatives tell you what a really good photographer you are
5.5-6 You are really getting good! If you post these elsewhere (like flickr) you will get lots of positive comments and probably hit "Explore" with this.
6-6.5 Awesome work.
6.5-7.5 You are a "Ribbon hog".

BTW, 17 comments in 4 challenges is a decent feedback rate for something that scores midrange.

as far as i'm concerned anymore the scores really don't mean much more than on that day someone shot a better picture than you in that challenge!i think there is a lot of crap floating around as far as scores go, they (sc) even threw in a famous shot once and it only got a 6 so don't let them hurt your feelings!!!!!!!!!

I kind of used to agree with the OP, but seems more and more people just generally vote on what they like or dont like.

for example, you can see a Nude that is technically excellent, but will be voted down by those who dont like nudity. Or a wonderful butterfly photo that people love or hate. etc... etc... etc....

I also think that people may vote higher on "unusual or unique" photos. Like if you live in the plains and you see landscape photos of the beautiful Rocky Mt's you may vote higher because those are things you dont see often,

I kind of do a mixed voting... Sometimes I really vote on what I like, but say there are 10 shots that I really like in a challenge (say I fav them) I go back to them and try to look at them from a photographer stand point and find out which ones technically the best...
