There is so much talk in here about voting technique and, as a newbie it can be quite intimidating. OK, so I'm not an expert and don't own a DSLR or have (say) 30 yrs photographic experience but I am a consumer and people buy what they like. I've just finished voting in the free challenge and have slightly changed my technique.
Every picture starts with a 5, if the image appeals to my personal taste it gets an extra point, if in my opinion it is a well thought out and composed picture it gets an extra point, if in my opinion it has that 'wow' factor it will get twix 1 & 2 extra points (depending on the wowness) if its a picture I'd like to hang on my wall it gets another point. If the contents doesn't appeal to me nomatter, it doesn't lose any marks just doesn't gain any.
On the downside, If it is a small image it loses a mark, if it is imho a 'snap' it loses a mark, if it obviously badly focused/composed it loses a mark. This was based on an open challenge, I will not add marks for a pic meeting the challenge but would reduce marks depending on imho the distance the pic is from the challenge requirements.
Pictures of cats, candles, bugs, the sky, the moon etc will be scored as above, no marks will be lost cos its been done before.
I'm happy now because I'll vote (albeit naievly) consistently on all images.

that sounds like a really good system.

You have arrived at a well-considered system that will result in consistency and use of most or all of the scale, weighted towards the center. Sounds good, and easy to apply (not overly complex).
As you gain experience you may change some aspects of your system, but you've got a good base to build on.

your systemis pretty much the same I have. I dont kill a score because I have seen 1 to many cats in a particular challenge.
But your comment on the camera is a commom mistake, you dont need a D-SlR, or a very expensive high end camera to take good photos. Its not the equipment, its the person operating the camera that makes a good photo. Granted some of the features on digital cameras will help or hurt the shot.
Heck I have a good D-SLR and still turn out horrid photos for the challenges, sometimes I just dont have any ideas or creativity and the submissions I make show it.
just hang out, watch and learn and vote, and ask los of questions

Just remember that not all photographs taken are to be hung on someone's wall. Photojournalistic, product, magazine, advertising, etc are also types of photography that can be very good for that particular genre without having or needing the hung art aethestics. I may not want a picture of a perfume bottle, for eg, hanging on my wall, but that does not mean it wouldnt make a great billboard or magazine advertising.

Also new to DPChallenge, I appreciate your sharing of this technique! I have attempted to score two of these challenges and had to re-adjust my scores every time!
Need some way to prevent my moods from affecting the evaluations! Your system looks like a great idea. |
