I am pretty disapointed with the results on my "Hot" entry, but i didn't get good feedback on the photo

What did i need to do to give the photo a pure black background?
Do you have any lighting tips for me?

It was a good idea, and mechanically well done.
I'll play with it during the down time.

Actually, i just used a black piece of paper, and i guess it reflected too much light.
I can provide the RAW file for anyone interested.
Playing with colors in Photoshop didn't really help, since in order to get the background black i had to darken the entire image.
How did the others in this challenge achieve that dark background color?

For basic editing, you have problems, no question about it. You can get a black BG with a selective color adjustment layer; choose the black channel, and increase the amount of black in it. But this affects all the dark areas of the image, so it changes it quite a bit. Give it a try and see what I mean. You can get some of it back by working on the reds and yellows, probably more successfully from the original than from this small JPG, but it's a compromise solution.

You basically have a lighting issue here, not a processing issue. It's a cool shot though :-)

ETA: you can send me the RAW if you wish, email's in profile.

Been trying things and have to agree w/ Bear, its got to be the lighting.
It really needs more light on the pepper, you can adjust the red to bring it up more , but then the flames get way out of wack.
