I have a friend that would like me to take some product shots to update her website. It is a clothing site for maternity clothes. My wife is 6 months pregnant, so she is going to model, but how much should I charge my friend? I have no clue how something like that should be structured. Nor do I know what normal would be, or what a good friend deal would be. Any advice would be most helpful.

While I won't give you any numbers (you'll have to figure out the value of your time plus expenses and profit), I will remind you to tack on an hourly rate for the model.

If I ever give discounts, I discount my time, but never my expenses or actual deliverables. Just food for thought.

1. Get a contract. Your friend's website is a business. The contract spells everything out for both of you. How many shots. How much time is involved. When images will be ready. What happens when things go bad. How much will be charged.

2. Treat the situation as a business relationship. The moment you start to treat it like a friendship, you'll start to want to do favors. Then your friend will ask you to do extra. Then the extra will have to be fixed.

Of course, if you have #1, you won't run into problems with #2 and you'll still have a undamaged friendship.

As for charging. That'll be a little hard since you have a model involved. For product shoots, it's usually non-human items. You can do those all day. The products will be on a model. Even worse, a pregnant model. Still much worse, the model is your pregnant wife. Make sure you factor that into your time.

Mostly, you charge for your time shooting and post-production (by the estimated hour) along with a per item cost. Maybe $75 per hour and $50-%150 per item. You'll also have to factor in the cost of the model along with any equipment you'll need to rent.

Good luck.
