First of all, are you CRAZY! I hope the hell when you were out of the green zone, at night, that you were flanked with a couple of M-60's and a crap load of M1's.
Sooooo......a Mosque.
My first impression, which is the best by the way, I saw a elongated face of a balding building.
The elongated windows, drooping and tired.
The duck billed canopy nose, welcoming visitors into it's narrow doored mouth.
The thinly, wired, electrical cable, wrinkled among the forehead of the face leading to a rounded, bald roof.
The side windows catching the sounds of life as it goes by.
Finally, the last vestige, the last evidence of hair, the lighting rod, sticking up as proof that youth was once present.
That's what I see.
Soooo....a Mosque.

This looks a lot like a US scene. The wheel chair accesses at the corner, and the fire hydrant, look pretty home grown. I've seen pictures of hexagonal stop signs in Iraq, so the stop sign isn't definitive either way.
As for the picture...
I like the lone light, and the mosque being a lighter color than the rest. Makes it look like a beacon, or safe haven in a pretty gritty neighborhood.
I like the tone of the image. I think I would disagree with the black and white suggestion. This has a little more dusty and worn feel to it.
There is a lot of nice texture to this image, and it is an image that you can spend some time exploring.
Nice work... Were this in a challenge, depending on the theme, I would probably go 8 maybe 9 on it.

I think this must be a secret US military Base. The building on the corner is actually the head of a giant ROBOT DUCK. That in the event of an attack can transform into a 10 story high enemy crushing monster. It must use the antenna on top to track enemy aircraft and then swat them out of the air like KingKong.
You know I'm right. Here is the link to prove it!

What an interesting statement.
Moslems, or Arabs, invaded N. Africa around the 7th century.
The invasion spread across the Mediterranean around the 8th century, and the Moors were in Spain by the 12th century, bringing with them the ground floor tools that we as civilized people today generally take for granted.
Tools like bathing, reading, politics, art and so on were enlightened onto the Cristian's of the period, whom, at that time thought that bathing was the reason for a lot of diseases.
I would not be surprised if the Arab countries came up with fire hydrants, handicapped ramps, and octagonal signs before modern America and Europe.
Then again, this could be midwestern territory smack dab in the middle of some corn field.

Hi Dave,
Sorry if my critique might seem harsh, but it is my honest opinion,
The composition here looks poor, the lighting as well, the details are not sharp in here, and it is missing a topic, in since of .. what am I looking for in this image?
Beside that .. it looks like a point and shoot picture which is missing the waww factor.
What I can suggest to make this image better:
Shooting it in a different time of the day, to have more light and a bet of a sky, adding an element or two to the image, like someone entering the mosque or leaving it, cropping the left side or adding more of the right. Yet I would still wonder if it will have the waww factor.
Sorry once again if it is harsh, it is only my honest opinion. Looking at your nice picture in your portfolio, assured me you will get my point,
with all due respect.
Regards,
|

It's one thing to say (accurately) that Europeans benefited from their contact with Middle Eastern empires before said empires began a thousand year decline, and quite another to act as if the modern Western world is a direct descendant of the east.
For that matter, not one of the examples you present was an Arab invention. The Chinese get writing (a pre-requisite of reading...), the Greeks would likely get politics (certainly politics as we understand it), Art (setting aside cave drawings) would also likely go to the greeks/minoans/etc. The greeks were the compelling influence on both european and arabic/persian civilizations, with the latter also getting some heavy exposure to Chinese innovations and philosophy.
some history
At any rate, fire hydrants are a British invention and the octagonal stop sign is an American invention (along with the vehicles they are meant to stop, go figure). I'll give you the handicap ramp, since the Egyptians were probably the first bunch to put wheels on their chairs and no doubt had to come up with a way to pull them into the garage.

I have no doubt that the Arab world has stop signs and fire hydrants, they probably have wheel chair ramps in urban areas. What I wanted to convey, and evidently did so poorly, is that these appeared to be in the US style. I did not mean to convey that the Middle East was uncapable of such things, and I actually think you are reaching a bit here to try to find some bias where there is none.
I do agree that the Arabs/Islam has had an under appreciated impact on western culture. Everytime we do math, or write down a number for any reason, we do so with the numbers the Arabs gave us westerners. Hence the term Arabic numerals, as differentiated from Roman Numerals.

My bad for the implied offense, however, I don't think I am reaching at all when purely talking about the elements within the photo.
