I would like to get a second battery for my new Canon 40D. Is it better to stay with the Canon brand battery, or can you use some other brand. Any thoughts on this? Thanks. |

Buy the generics. I have been using them for 2 1/2 years without a single problem. My Oly battery is 60 CDN dollars. I bought 2 generic brand batteries online for 18 dollars shipped. I see no difference between my original and the 2 others in performance. I did hear somewhere that the generics don't like cold weather operation though.

I certainly wouldn't make a blanket statement like "don't buy generics" but do consider this; the generics are often cheaper because:
- They may not include discharge protection circuitry. This circuit limits how far the battery can disharge, preventing premature failure of the cells.
- They may not provide adequate (or any) short-circuit over-current protection. This can be a danger if for some reason the battery terminals are shorted, a fire can result.
- They may or may not use as high quality cells as the OEM batteries.
Given that we're putting these batteries in a device worth from many hundreds to several thousands of dollars, my personal choice is to buy the OEM batteries. If you buy generics, do your research on the brand you are considering.

I started using generics (www.sterlingtek.com) with my Canon G3 and am still using them in the 40D. The Canon batteries that came with the G3 and 10D have long since crapped out (no longer hold a charge). The one that came with the 40D is still working but it's only been a few months.
I've used the generics in the 40D in the cold (-20C to -30C). No issues. Credit to the 40D for helping with battery life. Used for about 400 - 500 images before having to change (over the course of many hours in the cold). On the 10D I would have needed 3 batteries for that.
