I'll be there Monday Afternoon thru Wednesday afternoon, hoping to do some back-country hiking/camping at least one of the nights. What are the things that I can't miss (I know I have such a short time there), and what times are the best for shooting them?
Any and all suggestions are appreciated!
Thanks in advance,
-Adam
Side Note: I'll also be in LA for most of the week, anything cool to photograph there? |

In the Valley:
Swinging Bridge in the early morning, great reflections on the water.
Cook's Meadow at sunset/twilight, with Half Dome lit by the setting sun or moonlight. Glacier Point is also good and classic at sunset and twilight, but quite crowded.
Inspiration Point is good around mid afternoon (3 p.m.-ish) to try to catch a sunbow on Bridalveil Fall. |

Hey Adam, ENJOY! It's one of the best places I have ever been with my camera! I did a pretty basic write up when I visited in 2005, you can read it here. I hadn't had my dSLR very long when I went so I cant wait to go back one day when I know a bit more about photography!
Have a great trip :) |

I love that place, it is soo beautiful!
First, get in touch with the Ansel Adams Gallery, it has a walkabout of the valley going to some of Adams' most famous locations. As far as back country goes, hike half-dome in 1 or 2 days, I did it in one day, but you have to leave early. Last time I was there they were doing a bunch of construction by Yosemite Falls, so watch out. Granted that was back in march 2001 for my wedding. I got married at the Ahwahnee Hotel, which is a must see. Wonderful Architecture blended into the scenery. Plan on eating Pizza in Curry village one night as well it is Awesome!!!!!! Half dome has a wonderful glow in the evening as it catches the last light of the day, so I recommend being prepared to have your socks blown off.

A great hike with awesome views of the valley is up to Sentinal dome. Very easy hiking, breathtaking views of el Capitan, Halfdome and some of the falls, and generally light with regards to people concentration. Glacier point is just down the road as well so you can hit that one as well (but it is crazy busy with people).
Have a blast, don't forget the tripod, and keep an eye out for wildlife.

Havent been in the village for a while, but am planning a trip for next year.
While in Los Angeles, Santa Monica is interesting - it has a nice peir & downtown area. it can be busy though. Try Old Town Pasadena for some old california shots. these are both urban mind you except for the beach. The Huntington Library in Pasadena is nice for gardens and what not. Try Venice beach for people and candid shots. Also the canals in Venice are nice for architecture / folliage. For wildlife try Sepulveda Basin / Bolsa Chicka / Malibu Lagoon. If you head down south check out Laguna Beach - they have a nice pier, Mission, and bay. if your in for a good hike there are nice tide pools in Palos Verdes down the cliffs. and of course if all else fails, there is hollywood (last resort though =) ).
Have a great time! |
