I'm a web developer by trade and have put some wesbites together for my wife's interests and also for some friends. But I haven't done any paid freelance work. So now I've been approached to do something and asked what my pricing is. I have no idea! How does one price a project like this? And what about some sort of contract or agreement? Any ideas? |

Hate to say it but the honest answer is experience. Assuming it's a fixed price 1 person type of gig, you need to get some boundaries and scope agreed (in writing is a serious recommendation) before you bid. You then need to estimate the pieces you guess are there from what they say and deal with the scope creep :-) Some will be shorter and some longer then your estimates. You need to agree a way of discussing the details cause the scope cannot be defined in a lot of detail up front usually. Enjoy, Good luck....

My standard was $75/hr depending on the scope of the site. This price covered both back-end coding the presentation layer. If they required major sql integration and and extensive content management tools then a little more for that.
If they wanted a flat fee, I would show them several sites of different value - based on code complexity and data integration - and quote a flat fee.
I would also offer them to come up with the presentation layer and I would simply do the code.
Once .Net and XML/XSL became viable, that greatly reduced time and effort and it took less time to develop... this eventually priced me out of doing it as a side job (plus my real job actually required more focus). I no longer write code at all really don't miss it.
