I do most of my post processing in adobe lighroom, and often jump back and forth between a number of photos. It takes about 2 seconds to rended the high quality picture, which is kind of annoying.
The only thing i can pretty much do to my PC is add another 2GBs of RAM (i currently have 2). Will that make Lightroom faster? Or is that more processor driven?

I wish I knew what it takes to make LR fast (I suspect a fast processor or maybe memory speed rather then space, cause people with new machines seem to have far less issues).

I am not a windoze person so check this with google -> Depends on your OS - If it's XP 32-bit it's not likely to help much as a app can only address 2Gb with a 31bit number - with some settings you can have windoze use closer to 3Gb but anything more you are wasting really. If you are 64bit then have at it.

When you say 'render the high quality picture', do you mean the preview?

Aside from that, I've just added 4G of RAM to my computer and Lightroom doesn't seem to be a whole lot faster.

That's because you can only access 3.5 gigs of ram on most operating systems...

I'm reliably informed that I can access 32 on this computer. At least, that's how much they will sell you :)

I am refferring to preview of the image. It loads the blurry pixalated version fast, but takes some time to load up the higher version.

It's a 32-bit Windows XP (SP 3).
I guess i'll save my money, and not bother with more RAM. I'll be getting a new computer once my credit cards are paid off (hopefully this year)

When you import the photos there is a checkbox to indicate that you want it to render standard previews at the same time. Check it. Do your import and walk away for a little while. It'll render the preview images for all of your photos and make movement among the photos a whole lot faster.

What mode are you in (loupe or develop)? If you're in develop mode, you have to keep a copy of the original raw file in your camera raw cache, so if you're cycling through more than 10 images (about how much you'll keep in the cache at a time), you'll pay disk i/o penalties for every cache miss.

I posted a bunch of performance hints and tips in this thread which might be worth checking out.

RAM is nice for editing (i.e once you are in develop mode for an image), but most of your time in LR you are paying for disk i/o. For "flipping" among images, you're going to be hitting the disk(s) quite a bit -- as long as you stay in loupe mode (vs. develop) and are only viewing at a zoom-ratio for which you already have a preview generated, you'll have pretty quick performance (as long as your data path to your LR preview folder is fast). If you're in develop mode, you'll start incurring disk i/o penalties pretty quickly, especially if your original raw files are on the same disk or bus as your preview directory.
