My sister, who has used a Point-and-Shoot for as long as I can remember sent me an email and said she wants to move up to a DSLR. She has done some research on her own but called me for my input. She was leaning towards the SONY A200. The problem is, I do not know much about it with the exception of what I had read online. She also considered the Canon Rebel XTi. In addition, she was looking at the Olympus E410 or E510. I am supprised she didnt consider Nikon, but she has her own reasons for that. I would like to ask you all for your advice in helping her select a nice DSLR for around the $500 to $600 dollar range. Do any of you have much knowledge on the SONY A200, as that is the one she is really leaning towards? Thanks in advance for any assistance in helping her select her first DSLR. I have a feeling she will end up a member of DPC.

I am using the Xti, and I love it.

I went from Nikon to Canon

and the Xti is my first DSLR and I enjoy every click of it
while I am still new to DSLR's, I find this very easy to use and manipulate. I love the buttons. I also purchased a book Digital Rebel Xti/400D:Digital Field Guide

and it gives amazing examples, and teaches you how to easily use it
all I'm saying is:

for my first DSLR I am happy I got the Xti

Thanks Sugarpie, the XTi was one of her top two picks. I know several others how have the XTi and they all tell me the same.

I'd recommend a Rebel, too. Whether you choose the XT, XTi or XSi isn't that big of a deal, it's mainly a question of your budget. There's also the new Rebel XS (1000D) you might want to consider.

I think the value for money of these cameras is incredible. And as many participants here prove, they allow you to take amazing pictures in great quality. They are easy to use for beginners, but also allow you to get more sophisticated later. And should you want to get more serious about your photography, you can combine them with all the great Canon lenses (which you could continue to use should you ever upgrade to a different camera of the EOS series).
