Just finished voting, some very poor shots in this challenge.
Looks like many people have got the good ideas but forgot about the quality!
Poor focus, bad lighting etc.
I haven't started commenting yet, I think it's going to be a lot of pasting the same comment.
Pity..looks like the free study is much better, maybe people are rushing just to enter.

12 votes between 4amEST and 10amEST took me from 6.3240 to 6.0909 and two more right now just gave me a 6.0641. -_-

My submission dropped a full point over night and I am assuming this has to do with the global time slices who were voting rather than folks around here who stay up all night.
The submission involves an American consumer product that is almost iconic here, but may not translate globally. My question to the veterans of this site is, do photographs that are helped by national cultural knowledge get nailed in the overseas voting? Is this dip due to cultural difference, or is it that a more discriminating and discerning voter are voting later and think my shot bites?

This challange was my first challenge, and I didn't know that with basic editing you could inhance lighting and contrast ect. My pic isn't very good. I guess also if people knew my edited, they would know why it was out of place.

:(

Maybe next time I will do better

i think it is funny and interesting how there are different interpretations of OUT of Place...some went literal with no more place/land to go/move -OR- object has moved and not in it's normal place. But I do think there are a few 10's here!

Things to remember - this is an international site, so be obvious and the rules state "While voting, users are asked to keep in highest consideration the topic of the challenge and base their rating accordingly" and many vote that way (me included).

Gross, humour and sarcasm do not seem to do well.
Artsy/pretty pics will do much better than average snapshots, technically bad pics and those that have had the colors twisted or other severe digital art effects will get slammed.

A good idea done averagely has more vote getting ability than an average idea done well.

I whole-heartedly agree, Chris. Composition and adherence to theme is everything. Poorly composed images or images that seem too contrived, regardless of technical merit are simply not appealing.
Now that I have alienated the entirety of entrants in the 'Out of Place' challenge (some found my comments to be unconstructive), I will strive to provide more incisive, not necessarily insightful, commentary.
We are each a critic of our peer's work, the work into which they pour their heart and soul. Criticism should be noted, but not taken as gospel, just the opinion of one more fool. The vote is the best measure
of quality, the bottom line judge of merit. So, give it your best shot and never stop trying.
