Originally posted by gmeland: I purchased a Nikon D-70 digital camera back in April. The camera worked great for a couple of months and then one weekend I was out taking photos when, in-between shooting locations, the camera quit working. It gave me an indication that the lens was not attached - an "F-.-" error (according to the camera's manual). At first the problem was intermittent, but then it became continuous. With this problem, the camera will not take pictures unless you use the manual mode. In manual mode (with this problem), there is no indication of what the aperature is and it cannot be changed. I returned the camera to Nikon's service department, they fixed it (supposedly) and sent it back to me within 10 days.
This past weekend, I was out on another photo shoot with the same camera and the same problem occurred. The camera was working fine, then all of a sudden, I received the same error - an indication that there was no lens attached. I had not changed lenses, I had simply turned the camera off after shooting at one location, and turned it back on when preparing to shoot at another location. After getting this indication, I did change the lens in an attempt to clear up the problem, but this had no affect.
Has anyone else had this problem with the D-70? |
I had something a little like this with my Nikkor 50mm F1.8. I changed the lens and it went away. Then it happened again and I got really frustrated. then i noticed that i had inadvertently rotated the scroll wheel so it was about halfway between the Aperature Priority and Manual settings :)
I got a D.A.U. error (dumbass user error).
no problems otherwise, and yes I still love the camera.

I'm very happy with mine. Coming from a point-n-shoot, this has really opened the door to photography for me.

What he said *points down*. Make sure the setting on the lens is set to the smallest aperature.

The lens in question is the DX (CPU) lens that came with the camera - there is no aperture ring on these lenses, thus no way to lock the aperture ring. I did try with two non-DX lenses and made sure that the aperture ring was locked. Still had the same problem.

Talked to Nikon yet? Clean the contacts?
And even though I just got mine back from the service center (they replaced the mirror (was sticking) cleaned it all, readjusted the focus, etc.) after it being there for 25 days (and they shipped it back by ground when I sent it 2nd day-depressing), I still LOVE mine! Maybe even more so. Got it back about 3 hours before I had my first "model" shoot. It did awesome!

Never had any probs yet, I do believe that there is a firmware update available but I will not upgrade simply because my Nikon is working 100% error free and fine.... in my case the error is the photographer *GRINS*

Ok, this is a dumb question, but for the D70, can it use both cf type I or II?
Also, does this look legit? I got an email from them saying there was free shipping on my next purchase.

Thanks guys! |

The D70 can use both type 1 and II
That price certainly looks questionable to me...most reliable sites have it for $1299 (with the lens, $999 without).
-edit- also, since they have the battery listed at almost $200 and 128 mb cf cards at over $200, I'd stay away from them.

Yeah...No kidding! The body is cheap, but anything else they have is through the roof, so it looks like one of those, "all you get is the body, now you need to buy these things...if not, they don't have it in stock" type of thing.
I did get mine for aorund $900 w/ kit lens, though! From a respectable/noted online computer place that had it as open box...hence a month at the shop getting warranty work. So there are deals out there, but rare! |

Thanks for the help. So there are two slots for memory? Or is there one slot that they can both fit in? (one at a time of course) Would the best place to check out the validity of the website be the customer feedback? //www.shopcartusa.com/AMPhotoWorld?storedetails=yes#reviews I think the best thing to do is call, huh? I just want to get a good deal without getting screwed over.
What about this place?

One slot only. I purchased a Sandisk 512MB ultra II CF card (which is quite common) and have been happy ever since. No corrup images and really fast card. Fits 150+ images with maximum jpeg settings in my D70. Card is a bit expensive but it's worth the money.

AMPhotoWorld
The Camera Source
I always check resellerratings.com, but lately I only order from ones that are "chains", have a known name, and/or used in the past.

Again, if it looks too good to be true, it probably is... Here they are offering the body, lens, an additional battery, a 1 gigabyte compact flash card (and some other accessories) all for less than the street price of just the body alone.
Try to find out how that store is rated (I think someone mentioned resellerratings.com). If you can't find any reviews on it, that's usually not a good sign. I would suggest going with a reputable dealer. I bought mine at a Best Buy (I know, not the greatest camera store), but I knew that I wouldn't get taken. I would also recommend www.bhphotovideo.com

Also, there were a bunch of D70s stolen in July (stolen D70 article). With a price that low, there really is no way that they could legitimately be making a profit..
(edit, found this on digibest.com)

be careful about internet order thats cheap
this is what you have to read. dont get fooled by this ads.
MoneyGram international money transfer
Due to the high risk of credit card fraud we accept payments only via MoneyGram money transfer service. Once we receive the order we will contact you by e-mail and provide with necessary information (transfer details, nearest MoneyGram agencies).

So where exactly can I get a good deal on the D70? I want to get a good package that comes with a bunch of stuff so I don't have to buy everything separately. |

I'm hopefully acquiring a D70 in the nearish future.
Any thoughts/recommendations as far as the package with the 18-70mm lens goes?

get the lens, its a good lens, definitly better than those sigma/quantaray kit lens options. bh photo has a pack with a 1 gig sandisk extreme card for only like 30/40 more bucks and there is a 100 mail in rebate.

If i were to buy it again, i would still by my lens separately. |

The kit lens you bought seperatly?
BUY the kit lens with the camera. LOTS cheaper for a great, sharp lens. None others that really compare to it in its price range and size (18-70mm).

No, no, i mean buy non-kit lens separately. I haven't used the 18-70DX that comes with the kit, but i can definitely say that i love my 24-120VR, and i wouldn't be able to live w/o the 60/2.8 prime. If you really need the 18 part, perhaps the kit is a better option. I would consider the 17-35 lens though, i love it too, and it's worth it.
Yes, i realize i am talking about different price ranges, just mentioned that as an option to consider. |
