Having just moved from Elements to cs3, I'm trying to find an equivalent to the selection brush tool on Elements.
Basically the tool on elements allows you to manually paint an area for either masking or selection, but it doesn't have any 'auto -intelligence' it is purely manual - it only captures the exact area you 'paint'. So a bit like a 'Slow select tool' instead of a 'quick select' :- )
I find this really useful for choosing selections that are of a similar colour/tone, or even just selective desat on one specific area.
I've googled, and used the Adobe help, but I still can't seem to find the answer - any suggestions ?
I have a couple of other (easier) questions, but I'll let you warm up first : ) |

I've jsut discovered a couple of other threads on this that all point to the 'Quick selection tool'
I will go away and read up on it a bit more to see if it can do what I want.
Chances are high that it knows what it is doing - and I don't : ) |

Have you looked at quick mask? It sounds similar to what you're looking for:
Select the brush tool, with default black/white foreground/background and then type 'q'. Everything you paint will be red. The red color is the inverse of a selection, so basically you paint everything you dont want selected. If you paint over the red with a white brush, while still in quick mask mode, you undo the red, i.e., add to the selection with whatever you paint white. After you paint everything you can do lots of things, like Layer -> New layer -> curves, and only the areas that are not red will be affected.
I think that what you are looking for would be to go to quick mask mode (by typing Q) and then go to Edit -> Fill. Fill with black. Then whatever you paint with the white brush will be selected.
Probably someone else will come along with a much better description. I don't use this tool too often. You can also go click the Channels palette and see where your quick mask selections have been made. If you hover the mouse over the quick mask channel and control-click, it will select the outline you just made.
