I am going to New Zealand for a week and I would love some suggestions of where to go in the northern island, preferably only an hour or two away from Auckland

We did a week there last Oct. and did overnight tours to Rotorua Waitangi and to Bay of Islands, as well as a day tour of Auckland. I LOVED it all and can't wait to visit again for longer.
We'd planned to rent a car and go on our own but after talking to the tour operator in our hotel, figured out that it would be nearly as expensive and we'd see/learn less.
Their tours use 12-seat vans but, being offseason, we had them to ourselves and the drivers were free to talk with us about anything and everything rather than a set patter.
Our city tour driver was half Maori and not afraid to speak her mind, so we got the chance to get a different viewpoint that was very enlightening.

In Auckland itself we did a LOT of walking, spending a full day at the museum, winter gardens and surrounding park. I don't think we even made it quite through all the museum. It's a must on my list.
