The last two polls that ran on this subject don't really indicate a strong majority wanted an increase.
Last poll, and the one before that. |
Without doing the math, at a glance the last poll appears to show over 85% of respondants did in fact want an increase. That's a strong majority. |
Also note, that with the 'one before that' poll there was a corresponding screen size poll. To me they go hand in hand. Just because you (meaning the person reading this) could view the larger picture on your screen doesn't mean that the majority could.
Anyway, since when is this a majority rules community? ;o)

??? Given a top choice of 800x800, only 1 in 3 (33%, or 351 of 1067 participants) said yes. The rest opted for 700x700 or no change at all. |

Web site design is more about "lowest common denominator" more than it is about current market specs.
I wouldn't mind if all challenges were 720px, but i don't lose any sleep over it. |

You work for Fox News? The poll was 'do you want a size increase for challenge images'. An overwhelming majority did. |

True, but given a choice, only a third went for the largest option of 800x800. We have people in here talking about 1000+!
Personally, I like 720, but wouldn't want to see anything larger for reasons already pointed out (monitor size, voting screen, etc...).
And no, I don't work for Fox News. :-P |

The larger your images, the more incentive for people to steal them.
Besides, as you may or may not have heard, Drew & Langdon are discussing some (possibly) major site changes, so it seems very unlikely there will be any significant "tweaks" along this line until then. When? Who knows. |

I guess ´pretty standard´ depends on the sites one visits. |
Photo.net - 1024px widest
fotocommunity.de - 1000px widest 400kb
photosight.ru - 800px widest 150kb
trekearth.com - 800px widest 200kb
Where I do not come anymore
Photosig: wxl =640000 so 1000x640 is possible
I can't remember a site with smaller pics. And if they have, I am not interested. The pics on usefilm.com are sometimes great but incredibly irritating small. |
foto.no : W<1280 H<768 file size<300KB there's nothing like the need for opening lots of pictures in rapid succession, like there is here. |

Sure wish they'd decide in the next four days if that's the route. I could save my $25 buck renewal. |

Wow, they could even print 5x7s if they wanted too. The best way to keep your images from being stolen is to keep them off the internet. That really isn't a valid argument. |

And if we kept all of our images off of the Internet, there would be no point to dpc. |

Exactly. So how about we just quit worrying about image thieves. We do what we can to protect our work, and that's all we can do other than keeping it off the web all together. No one is going to make any substantial amount of money claiming rights to images that are not theirs. Let's drop the silly arguments and give us more reasonable image sizes. At least let's do it before google buys the site. |

Thank goodness! As has already been pointed out numerous time, several in this thread alone, the sizing currently in use at DPC works quite well. Browser real estate, voting page layout, etc...

Yet, you're still here at DPC, and active too. ??? |
